Division/Department Information

The Department of Chemistry at the Queens campus of St. John's University located in New York City is seeking applicants for three one-year full-time assistant professor faculty positions with a possibility of renewal. We are specifically looking for a) one candidate with expertise in the field of Analytical Chemistry, b) one with expertise in the field of Organic Chemistry, and c) one with expertise suitable for general chemistry.

While the primary focus is on the undergraduate program, the Department of Chemistry offers both the B.S. and M.S. degrees. We have twelve tenured faculty members all of whom maintain active research and scholarly activities. The department graduates about twenty ACS-certified B.S. chemistry majors and five M.S. students per year. There is an active ACS-student Chapter and seminar program with weekly meetings. The department is well equipped with modern instrumentation, including a 400 MHz NMR, ICP, GC-MS, GC-FID, UV-vis, fluorescence, LC-MS, HPLC, and FTIR instruments. Responsibilities

The successful candidate for the position in analytical chemistry will primarily be responsible for undergraduate courses in analytical chemistry along with coordinating multiple sections of an introductory general chemistry course. The successful candidate in organic chemistry will primarily be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in organic chemistry. The successful candidate for the position in general chemistry will be responsible for coordinating and teaching multiple sections of general chemistry.

All successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching chemistry at the undergraduate level. Candidates with experience of teaching diverse learners and who have demonstrated antiracism and inclusivity in their pedagogy, or in their pedagogical plans are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in chemistry. The candidate will have an ability to teach and develop courses in their area of expertise at the graduate and undergraduate level. A successful applicant will support our vision that academic excellence requires a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Demonstrated excellence in teaching chemistry is encouraged.
