The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.Essential Job Duties:
This IT Analyst/Programmer I – Crop and Soil Sciences position provides data science, back-end programming, and cloud support for the Precision Sustainable Agricultural team. Work consists of setting up components of a cloud architecture and data management pipeline for a distributed agricultural research team. This position works with researchers to deploy crop models, decision support tools, and databases. Applicants should be well versed in managing virtual machines and containers, creating API’s, and continuous integration. All work is currently conducted in Azure.
The successful candidate will develop and deploy cloud infrastructure and data management tools based on their experience with similar systems to perform agricultural data science. The incumbent will make decisions based on current technologies to ensure that applications developed by the data science team will run on all operating systems. The incumbent develops and documents procedures in order to ensure that these systems and software are functioning properly. The incumbent decides what needs to be done based on analyses of the situation and selects appropriate courses of action from acceptable alternatives.
This position is located in Beltsville, MD.Other Responsibilities:

Master’s degree or relevant bachelor’s degree plus two years relevant professional experience.Other Required Qualifications:
Knowledge of hardware and software functions, network and operating system specifications, sufficient to develop new work methods, standards.
Working knowledge of Linux.
Working knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS).
Competence in server administration and basic cybersecurity of distributed systems.
Relevant work experience in a web development environment.
Basic graphic design skills including creating basic assets for a website.
Ability to create wireframes & mockups.
Familiarity with human-centered design and iterative development.Preferred Qualifications:
Degree(s) and/or license in computer science, IT or other relevant discipline.Required License(s) or Certification(s):
