Academic Advising Specialist 

Job Purpose
Towson University (TU) is one of the nation’s top 100 public universities. The Nursing department is accepting applications for a contractual Academic Advising Specialist to provide academic advisement to over 400 Degree Completion nursing students. Responsible for counseling related to course progression and graduation. Coordinate and lead orientation events and assist in management of a student progression and graduation database.

Description
Advise over 400 degree completion nursing students. Assist advisees in the understanding of their academic plan of study. File a degree completion plan for all advisees. Revise degree completion plans as needed. Support students in the course registration process. Counsel students in department and university policies and procedures. Monitor advisees on a leave of absence and/or inactive in the option. Make appropriate referrals to campus resources such as tutoring, financial aid, scholarships, etc. Interact with students through face-to-face meetings, phone, email and WebEx/Skype sessions. Coordinate and lead orientation programs for incoming advisees. Maintain accurate advisee information in a nursing student database. Report changes in students’ academic status and progression. Manage graduation clearance of degree completion students. Participate in department, university and/or partner school meetings. Provide coverage in nursing admissions and advising office as needed. Engage in other activities and meetings to maintain high quality student advising.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum two years of experience.
  • Experience in an educational setting with previous advising or student-related experience. 
  • Effective organizational and management skills that allow for coordinating complex activities. 
  • Strong communication skills that facilitate working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners. 
  • Proficient knowledge of computer software programs including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, WebEx, Zoom, Skype, Blackboard, and website management. 
  • Travel required for open houses, information sessions, and advising (off site).

 

 

Preferred:

  • Master's degree with counseling and/or higher education experience.  
  • Prior experience with supervising students or employees.

A Criminal Background Investigation is required for the hired candidate, and the results may affect employment.

Salary and Benefits
