Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of IT User Services, the Systems Engineer plays a crucial role in the efficient operations of Nicolet College and helps to ensure a high-level user and student experience. Responsibilities include the provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of virtual servers, server hardware, software, and related infrastructure. The Systems Engineer incorporates industry best practices and cutting-edge concepts to ensure that servers are highly available, performant, efficient, and that their configurations adhere to the College’s policies and standards.

The Systems Engineer also provides daily monitoring and maintenance of server hardware, server operating systems, backups, VMWare, and other server-related infrastructure in order to meet the existing and future needs of enterprise operations and initiatives.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

This list is not all-inclusive; other duties may be required and assigned.
Systems Support

  • Coordinate and ensure the integrity of data backups, disaster recovery systems, event log reviews, anti-virus updates, password reset tools, and participate in contingency planning.
  • Write and update user documentation and system documentation.
  • Write test plans and coordinate user and internal testing. Resolve and re-test identified errors and problems.
  • Apply service packs and patches to test and production environments.
  • Perform user/role access administration and account audits; ensure change authorization and documentation is completed according to policy.
  • Development Projects
  • Participate in projects by investigating, evaluating, and implementing integrated solutions within time and budget constraints. Provide technical guidance to colleagues and students.
  • Develop and document implementation and installation plans for new hardware and software systems, determine hardware requirements, and coordinate installation.
  • Perform end-point monitoring, root cause analysis, and corrective action to minimize or prevent service interruptions.
  • Utilize change management system to communicate the nature, significance, and risk factors of enterprise-wide changes.
  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree in Information Technologies, Computer Programming, or related field.
  • Experience with VMware administration.
  • Experience with O365 administration.
  • Experience with Active Directory administration.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field.
  • Two to five years of related experience in an IT setting.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience with installing, operationalizing, and maintaining servers. This includes the systems, software, and tools required to support, manage, monitor, and automate complex applications.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of application administration, including troubleshooting, application server and java tuning, performance monitoring, upgrading, patching, backup/recovery, and disaster recovery.
  • Experience in administration of server operating models.
  • Ability to troubleshoot beyond the application environment and into related operating systems and database areas.
  • Experience with VMware Administration.
  • Must be willing and able to own responsibility for critical systems and work evening and/or weekends to support scheduled updates and unplanned outages.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and manage multiple concurrent tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to research and troubleshoot problems independently and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience in automating or scripting tasks.
  • Experience in Cloud Architecture and supporting data flow for SaaS solutions.

  • Work in office area as well as throughout the College. Sit at workstation for prolonged periods of time. Stand, bend, and move intermittently during working hours.
  • The employee will be frequently required to walk, touch/handle/grasp (using hands and fingers), and reach with hands and arms.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to normal office conditions and usual office equipment such as telephone, personal computer, printers/copiers, reports and files, as well as the outside elements at a variety of locations.
  • The employee will be required to sit, talk, hear, and type/write.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, far, and field of vision.
  • The employee must demonstrate strong attention to detail, and must be able to perform complex tasks without error.
