EWU offers 135 fields of study, 9 master’s degrees, 12 graduate certificates, 39 graduate programs, 1 educational specialist degree, and 1 applied doctorate to more than 10,000 enrolled students.


Job Summary:
  • Eastern Washington University invites applications for a Program Coordinator in the Children's Studies Program, for our School of Social Work in the College of Social Sciences. This is a 50% time position that works 12 months each year.
  • Under general direction, this position is responsible for coordinating specialized program operations for the Children's Studies Program. In this capacity, the position will also provide support to the Director and program faculty, coordinate special projects, manage budgets, and provide technical, administrative, and student services support. Position will exercise independent judgment and discretion relating to students in regard to program policies, guidelines and contracts and in implementing, interpreting and applying program procedures and policies. Position will independently advise students, staff and the public regarding the program and the University, and act as liaison to local organizations.
  • In the course of performing the position's duties, this position will have extensive involvement with students, staff and the public in carrying out program activities, and will coordinate, schedule and monitor program activities to determine consistency with program goals. Position may also include direct supervision of children and youth in project-based settings.
    Position reports directly to the Director of the Children's Studies Program.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years relevant employment/educational experience in social work or related settings that provide academic program support services, which are equivalent to the major work responsibilities required by this program.
  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to (note: applicants may be tested as part of the interview process):
    • MS Word - perform complex word processing tasks.
    • MS Excel - use spreadsheets to develop and maintain records.
    • Database Management - maintain complex databases, including sorting/importing/exporting files and creating reports.
    • Email - Ability to send messages to multiple recipients, make contact lists, send attachments.
    • Internet - Ability to search and retrieve information from the internet efficiently.
  • Two years’ experience maintaining both manual and electronic records and files.
  • Two years’ experience demonstrating success handling customer contact and providing customer service.
  • Two years’ experience with demonstrated success in the ability to successfully handle a demanding workload with overlapping deadlines and which require great attention to detail, strong communication skills, perseverance, initiative, and ability to function equally well taking direction and working independently, and in an environment characterized by interruptions throughout the work day.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal accessibility, of our students, faculty, staff and the public.
  • Must have transportation, a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preference may be given to current or former employees of Eastern Washington University (part-time included)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Children’s Studies, Social Work or closely related field.
  • Two or more years work experience in a higher education environment involving academic program student support services
  • Two or more years experience in child-centered, community based settings using project-based learning and familiarity with Reggio-inspired curriculum, adventure play, and/or youth work.
  • At least one year experience using Blackboard/Canvas, Navigate, EagleNet, Banner, and other university administrative systems, or equivalent
  • Two years’ experience in ordering, purchasing, arranging travel, and budget management.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to stay focused and make progress on long-term projects despite frequent interruptions by individuals and short-term program needs.

Program Coordination Activities
  • Assist in writing, completion and presentation of reports, special projects and assignments, and program updates;
  • Assist with student admission and registration processes, and progression through the program.
  • Provide programmatic support to Director including work related to program development and implementation.

Program Related Public & Organizational Contact
  • Serve as primary contact with students, faculty, faculty field instructors and external agencies regarding program policies and procedures;
  • Independently advise students, staff and the public regarding the program and the University;
  • Act as liaison to faculty, staff, and colleagues at other agencies/institutions, representatives of funding agencies and officials from professional organizations, business, industry and government, interpreting policies and making decisions which facilitate progress of project(s);
  • Represent the program at public, program and College functions; and,
  • Coordinate program information with EWU departments.

Responsibility / Duty:
Technical & Administrative Support
  • Provide routine support to staff relating to use of hardware and software, networking, setting up computer accounts;; refer technology issues/problems to the Office of Information Technology;
  • Assist students with EagleNet, Canvas, SOAR, Navigate, and web-based and online technologies;
  • Provide administrative support to Director;
  • Design office procedures, policies and forms including interpretation and application of administrative policies to the work of the program;
  • Coordinate administrative standards and procedures for independent yet interrelated departmental functions such as research, curriculum and instruction;
  • Use EagleNet, Navigate, Banner, Canvas, SOAR, and other software to assist staff and students; and,
  • Perform office support functions: purchase supplies; screen, prioritize and distribute incoming mail; answer, screen, and direct telephone calls; compose and edit correspondence including confidential and sensitive information; coordinate document preparation for travel, purchasing, student employment, and event coordination.

  • Initiate, maintain, and distribute student contact information;
  • Assist students with EWU, Program policies and procedures;
  • Assist students with registration, student record changes, and grade information at the behest of program faculty; and,
  • Process and distribute student evaluations.

Other Duties
  • Supervise student workers;
  • Provides staff support for meetings including agenda preparation, minute taking and preparation, tracking and monitoring committee projects and materials distribution, preparation and dissemination of confidential documents;
  • Perform office support functions: order and receive office supplies; book orders (including desk copies); inventory equipment; screen, prioritize and distribute incoming mail; answer, screen and direct telephone calls; compose and edit correspondence including confidential and sensitive information;
  • Coordinate document preparation for travel, purchasing, student employment, and event coordination;
  • Arrange faculty travel; process travel documents; reconcile monthly Central Travel Account;
  • Monitor budget; and,
  • May also manage and schedule the Director’s appointment calendar, organize and prioritize incoming email for program faculty, and act as confidential liaison on behalf of Director.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.
  • This position is covered by the Washington Federation of State Employees’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Salary Information: $18,366 - $23,784
