The Director of Finance and Administration is the chief fiscal and operating officer of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences at UT Knoxville, and reports directly to the Dean as a member of the Executive Leadership Team. Responsibilities include strategic long-range planning, budget building and management, financial reporting and analysis, research support and compliance, oversight of daily business and fiscal transactions, oversight of Human Resources within the College, and oversight of fiscal and HR activity at the department level, as well as policy and legal compliance. The Director must understand the strategic plans and operational needs of all facets of the College, and must work with all of the members of the Leadership Team, Directors, and Department Heads. Success in managing such a portfolio of responsibilities requires a high level of communications skills, and the ability to advocate for sometimes unpopular decisions or to handle strong differences of opinion. The position acts in a leadership capacity on behalf of the College with Vice Chancellors, Directors in Budget & Finance central administration, Provost, Human Resources, enrollment management and other units across campus. The position has full signature authority for the college and is accountable for its overall fiscal and operational health. The position manages a team of three direct reports as well as dotted-line reporting from the college departments and centers for compliance and fiscal policy/administration.
 



Qualifications
Required attributes:
•    Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, or a related field
•    Ten years of progressive accounting or finance experience in a complex organization including management / oversight of multiple units
•    Proven experience providing advice, guidance, and analysis to senior leadership
•    Experience supervising associates at various levels of engagement including accounting staff and support staff
•    Ability to develop and manage complex multi-million-dollar budgets
•    Ability to analyze financial statements and produce forecasts and projections
•    Ability to identify trends in data, identify actionable options based on those trends, make decisions related to those trends, and implement organizational change based on data and trends
•    Ability to plan future investments in technology and infrastructure as key to the enrollment management of the college
•    Outstanding skills in planning, problem solving, analysis, organizational and project management, and customer service
•    Outstanding verbal, written, and personal communication skills
•    Ability to advocate for a particular ideological, strategic, or policy position
•    Ability to work with cross-functional teams, and build and nurture relationships
•    Ability to interact and communicate effectively with a wide variety of groups and individuals at all levels of the organization
•    Ability to listen
•    Ability to create systems for efficient workflow and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
•    Ability to lead, motivate, mentor, and inspire people to high performance and engagement

Preferred attributes:
•    MBA or Master’s Degree in Business, Finance, or a related field
•    CPA
•    Experience in higher education, especially at an R1 academic institution
•    Experience with or knowledge of RCM-type budget models
•    Work history related to post-award management of grants and contracts
•    Experience with Human Resources management and policies
•    Knowledge of GAAP or FASB or GASB, FAR, Uniform Guidance and other government or university policies
•    Working knowledge of IRIS / SAP or a similar large and complex ERP system
•    Knowledge of other data information systems such as Banner, Taleo, Interfolio, Concur, electronic time recording and reporting, OnBase, etc.
•    Experience using Office365, PowerBI, Access or other database software
•    Experience using pivot tables and advanced reporting tools such as Tableau or other graphics-based tools
•    Ability to translate data into "a story" to present complex information in a simple way
