The New V.O.L. Experience introduces students to the University of Tennessee in three phases: 1. Advising; 2. Online Pre-Orientation; and 3. Big Orange Welcome, UT’s extended six-week orientation period. With the Assistant Director, Special Programs, the Coordinator, Special Programs position plays a critical role coordinating and developing major programs and special events for Big Orange Welcome, especially Vol Success Week, special events for the Division of Student Success & orientation for special groups, while supporting the overall mission of the Office of New Student Orientation. The Coordinator is supervised by the Assistant Director, Special Programs.

Responsibilities:

Event Planning & Program Development: Reporting to the Assistant Director, Special Programs the Coordinator, Special Programs will assist in all aspects of event planning and program evaluation for major events (i.e. concerts, performances, speakers, etc.) during Big Orange Welcome, and especially Vol Success Week. This includes communication and coordination with campus partners and off-campus vendors, purchasing in collaboration with the Assistant Director, Special Programs and Administrative Coordinator, and oversight of on-site even logistics. The Coordinator, Special Programs, will be on site for programs as needed in Summer, Spring, and Fall, and will be the main point of contact for major programs, both on and off-campus. The Coordinator, Special Programs will also contribute to development and implementation of programs for special populations, including orientations for special groups; The Coordinator will serve on the Vol Success Week Committee, and will participate on other committees/initiatives aligned with the goals of the office and division, including student receptions, programs for special populations, and division-wide programming.

Supervision: Co-supervise graduate assistants, practicum students, NODA Interns, and student leaders as needed; Assist with recruitment and selection of student staff (graduate assistants, practicum students, NODA interns, and student leaders); Supervision may include travel to support student leaders at conferences or retreats and orientation events.

Leadership: Serve on the Vol Success Week Committee and major event & special program committees; Serve on Orientation Advisory Committee, and serve as liaison to various offices on campus when planning major events.

Office Responsibilities: Contribute to shared program development in the office and committee work in the division, including but not limited to assessment/data analysis of programs, student and staff search, and expansion of the Big Orange Welcome program and Vol Success Week, specifically w/ major events and special programs; Staff events supported by the Office of New Student Orientation as assigned; Attend all New Student Orientation meetings and trainings.



Qualifications
Bachelor's degree; 1 year of experience working in the area of student activities (education or graduate assistantship experience may replace full-time experience), event planning and/or new student or transition programs; Direct experience working with students in a higher education setting; Experience with relevant technology programs; Experience working effectively with a diverse student and family population

• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills

•Knowledge & commitment to the educational development of students

• Specialized knowledge of issues related to student transition to college

• Skilled ability to relate effectively with students, parents, and other University partners

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree or anticipated Master's degree in higher education, college student personnel, or related field preferred.
