The Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) invites applications for a faculty appointment in veterinary clinical pathology, available immediately. The appointment will be offered as a tenure- or clinical-track assistant or associate professor, dependent on the individual’s interests and qualifications. The successful candidate will join 3 other clinical pathologists and be expected to contribute to diagnostic service, research/scholarship, and teaching, dependent on final appointment parameters. The position can be part-time at 50% effort (primarily service and teaching) up to a full-time, 12 month appointment, the latter providing more time for research with commensurate increases in expectations. Teaching responsibilities in the DVM curriculum include shared participation in a core clinical pathology course and a clinical rotation, with additional opportunities available, including contributions to the graduate program. Compensation will depend upon qualifications and experience. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.
The UTCVM is located in Knoxville, a short drive away from the Great Smoky Mountains and from a number of state parks and recreation areas, with many outdoor activities available. The city also has many sporting events and a vibrant downtown with excellent restaurants, bustling farmer’s markets, and a lively arts and cultural scene including live music, theater, and many art and cultural festivals. It was recently named one of the country’s Top 100 Best Places to Live by livability.com and described as “the perfect combination of natural beauty and big city amenities”. The College currently matriculates 85-90 DVM students per year, some of whom go on to obtain combined degrees in our intercollegiate Comparative and Experimental Medicine graduate program. The department is home to diagnostic laboratories in clinical pathology, anatomic pathology, bacteriology/mycology, endocrinology, parasitology, immunology, virology, and pharmacology (https://vetmed.tennessee.edu/vmc/dls) that serve the College’s Veterinary Medical Center and referring veterinarians. Current areas of research focus in the College include infectious disease/immunology and regenerative medicine. Faculty enjoy full access to University core facilities in advanced microscopy and ultrastructural imaging, DNA sequencing, and biological and small molecule mass spectrometry, among others. Advanced computing and modeling expertise are available through the University, NIMBioS, and in conjunction with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Qualifications:
Qualified applicants must have: (1) a DVM (or equivalent degree); (2) board certification in clinical pathology from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ECVCP), or eligibility to take the ACVP or ECVCP board certification examination in 2021; (3) excellent verbal and written communication skills, and (4) the ability to work well with others in a collegial, team atmosphere. Those seeking a 12 month appointment will preferably have demonstrated interest and potential for sustained research productivity.
