Position Highlights:

The Assistant Director, Outreach is a university staff position responsible for K-16 educators’ outreach of the University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), a Title VI National Resource Center with support from the US Department of Education. This position develops, promotes, and manages outreach programs; works with external and internal partners; supervises student outreach assistants; and ensures effective outcomes within university policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organizes CMES K-14 educators’ and students’ workshops and conferences
  • Organizes and gives presentations to K-16 classes, regional K-16 educators’ workshops and conferences, and, time permitting, at national K-16 educators’ conferences
  • Arranges competitions for CMES awards, including Lesson Plan awards and Arizona National History Day prizes
  • Maintains and recommends additions to the CMES outreach materials collection for K-14 educators and community members
  • Arranges CMES Speakers Bureau and Outreach Scholar classroom and community group presentations by CMES faculty and UA students
  • Maintains and extends CMES contacts with individual teachers, school and community college districts and Arizona Department of Education
  • Organizes outreach collaborations with other UA units, including the UA Center for Latin American Studies and UA College of Education, and other institutions
  • Contributes to and in some cases organizes additional outreach programs, including CMES Outreach Scholars, International Studies Partnership Program, International Studies Teacher Ambassadors Program, and Teachers Collaborating Across Borders
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director, Outreach’s supervisor
  • Responds to inquiries about the Middle East from teachers and community members, and provides reference to resources
  • Oversees development of outreach materials, including lesson plans and outreach websites.
  • Provides outreach content for CMES print and social media, in coordination with other CMES staff, including TVI Media Assistant, to share information about outreach programs
  • Writes outreach sections for grant proposals and publications; contributes to grant reports on CMES outreach activities to U.S. Department of Education and other funders
  • Writes grant proposals specifically for outreach activities, e.g. Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad trips to Middle East studies-related regions, and NEH Summer Institutes
  • Serves as CMES liaison to the Middle East Outreach Council
  • Supervises student outreach assistants
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor'sdegree in a Middle East-related field or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional levelexperience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is typically required.
  • Course work in Middle Eastern studies or related field.
  • Experience in a Middle East-related field.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MA or PhD in a Middle East-related field
  • Experience in the Middle East
  • Experience with a Middle Eastern language
  • Experience in using databases, such as Microsoft Access
  • Teaching experience at the K-12 and/or college level
  • Experience interacting well with diverse constituencies
