Position Summary:The Business Intelligence Analyst reports directly to the Director of Strategic Analysis and Business Intelligence. S/he collects and disseminates consistent, accurate, transparent, timely and actionable statistics and data on all aspects of the Gillings School of Global Public Health, including data that contribute to the School’s evaluation plan, University requirements, and requirement from School and program accreditors.
The core responsibility for the Business Intelligence Analyst is to independently and reliably create computer programs, databases, and data analyses and visualizations in support of the key needs of School decision makers. Primary duties include: collection, validation, and reporting of School and University data; development and maintenance of data infrastructures to support reporting; and regular data extraction, manipulation, analysis, visualization and interpretation of results using complex programming and statistical tools. S/he manages and/or assists with survey administration, including preparation, administration, data analysis and visualization, and reporting of findings. S/he will assist the Director of Strategic Analysis and Business Intelligence with data management and analysis, project coordination, documentation, and special projects as requested. S/he will support the Director of Strategic Analysis and Business Intelligence in the evaluation of School and department performance. S/he will also conduct follow up analyses resulting from metric and key performance indicator analyses that involve novel solutions and further investigation, policy analysis and use of qualitative and quantitative research methods. This individual will team and/or help the Business Intelligence Senior analyst, student analysts and temporary staff, as needed, in support of project demands. S/he will understand and maintain expertise in institutional research and business intelligence and will consult with school leadership on these areas of expertise.
Required: Master’s or Bachelor’s and 0-2 years’ experience or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Preferred: Master or other advanced degree in a business analytics, information science, higher education management, organizational management, computer science, operational statistics, economics, marketing analytics or other analogous analytical or research-based field is required. Or Bachelor’s degree and 2 years in business application consulting or development. Degree will be in a data-oriented field associated with strong research methods, statistics, and data visualization experience.
Qualifications and Experience:A Masters degree is preferred. The candidate will demonstrate experience and confidence in independently extracting, manipulating, analyzing, interpreting, and documenting large, complex data sets, with a minimum of three years working with programming and statistical software (SAS, SQL, R, Python accepted). SAS certification is a plus. Minimum of 2 years use of business intelligence reporting environment (Tableau preferred, SAS VA, OBIEE, Business Objects, other), writing reports and measuring key performance indicators. Two years of experience with querying data systems. Knowledge with survey administration tools (Qualtrics, Blue, other). Knowledge of quality systems (i.e. six sigma) or other equivalent process control methodologies, and business process design & assessment is desirable. Preference will be given to candidates with data and reporting experience in a complex educational environment, particularly with elaborate enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as PeopleSoft or Banner or other relational database structures.
The successful candidate will have experience in higher ed institutional research, assessment, or accreditation functions. Attention to detail and commitment to data quality, the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in an intense, fast-paced environment are essential. Understand functional and process-oriented requirements to meet needs of end users; and then interpret and translate customer needs, evaluate code and its functionality through problem solving, and recommend or modify to improve performance and consumption.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.
