Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:UNC Greensboro is a minority-serving institution with an undergraduate population of 49% ethnic minority students and 67% female students. Fully accredited by National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the School of Music consists of 55 full-time faculty and nine full-time staff members, and enrolls over 370 undergraduate and 170 graduate students. The School offers nine degree tracks in liberal arts and professional degree programs including the BA in Music, BM degrees in Music Education and Performance, MM degrees in Music Composition, Education, Theory and Performance, the DMA in Music, and the PhD in Music Education.
Located in artistically thriving Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, the Triad area provides a wealth of cultural and academic opportunities for our students. Students regularly attend and perform in concerts by the NC Folk Festival, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Greensboro Opera Company, the Winston-Salem Symphony, and the Eastern Music Festival along with musical theatre, jazz, and chamber music ensembles.
Position Summary:The UNC Greensboro School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks an accomplished leader who will work collaboratively with faculty and staff to further the mission and vision of the School of Music. The Director of the School of Music is an 11-month position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor of Music with tenure. The start date for this position is August 1, 2022. The Director is appointed to a four-year, renewable term and reports directly to the Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Successful candidates will have academic and administrative experience as well as significant achievements as a music performer and/or scholar.
The primary responsibilities of the Director of Music are to:
• Lead the faculty, staff, and students of the School of Music in a manner that cultivates the best of individuals and furthers the vision of the school;
• Advocate and speak for the School of Music within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the University, and the larger community;
• Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of the School’s operations, including its staffing, curriculum, program offerings, and public events;
• Support ongoing professional development in specific diversity competencies such as culturally responsive pedagogy, racial literacy, gender equity, and LGBTQ+ inclusion;
• Manage fiscal and business resources through financial planning and strategy;
• Manage and mentor personnel to promote individual professional development and collaborations among colleagues and between faculty and students;
• Support innovations in teaching, research, and creative activity;
• Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in areas of expertise to a diverse student population; and
• Assist the Dean and the College’s Director of Development in donor cultivation and the stewardship of major gifts.
• PhD, DMA, or the professional equivalent, and evidence of excellence in teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service.
• Credentials appropriate for appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor with tenure.
• Record of leadership in supporting faculty and student development leading to increased equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Significant experience in fiscal oversight and management.
• Commitment to establishing and maintaining the confidence of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the professional community.
• Commitment to UNCG’s core values of inclusion, collaboration, sustainability, and transparency.
• An ongoing engagement with the field including familiarity with a broad range of historic and contemporary practices in pedagogy, scholarship, and artistry.
• An understanding of current issues in higher education and national and international trends, and how systems of inequality shape these institutional dynamics.
