About P.K. Yonge

P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School (DRS) is a public school established in 1934 with the mission to design, test, and disseminate innovations in K-12 education through serving a student population representative of Florida’s economic, racial, gender, and academic diversity. P.K. Yonge seeks to attract a faculty that reflects the diversity of our student population. Affiliated with the College of Education at the University of Florida, P.K. Yonge faculty may partner with members of the college to develop, and test teaching solutions grounded in our shared values of inclusivity, accessibility, equity, and student agency while educating approximately 1250 students on campus.

The Opportunity and Job Description

The P.K. Yonge Assistant Principal (1) demonstrates leadership in school safety and school improvement effectiveness; (2) demonstrates skills to gather, analyze, and synthesize information to ensure equity in educational opportunity and academic achievement; (3) assists in establishing and maintaining a safe and effective learning climate in the school; (4) assists in developing and establishing school improvement goals and objectives; (5) attends special events, functions, and athletic events weekly beyond the school day; (6) leads and assists with supervision of students campus wide before/during/after the school day. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute as follows:

  • Provide leadership and oversight for safety and security personnel, policies, and procedures for the school/district. 
  • Lead school safety and emergency planning and preparation, including an active assailant response plan.  Lead coordination and planning with the University of Florida Police Department and the University of Florida Emergency Management Department. 
  • Maintain school/district policies and procedures in compliance with state law and rules.
  • Lead planning and training including all and resources for emergency procedures, including active shooter training and fire drills, as well as school safety and security.
  • Serve as the school/district liaison with local public safety agencies and national, state, and community agencies and organizations in matters of school safety and security.
  • Conduct the annual school security risk assessment in accordance with s. 1006.1493 using the school security risk assessment tool developed by the Office of Safe Schools by October 1st of each school year.  Based on assessment, make recommendations to the principal and director regarding strategies and activities to be implemented to improve school safety and security. Provide an annual report to the School Advisory Council.
  • Serve as school/district liaison to the FL Department of Education Office of Safe Schools.
  • Lead promotion of P.K. Yonge stakeholder use of emergency notification applications.
  • Collaborate with P.K. Yonge Director of Communications to design and distribute preventative, advisory, and emergency communications related to school safety and security.
  • Serve as school/district liaison for the University of Florida Police.
  • Serve as school/district liaison to the University of Florida Department of Emergency Management.
  • Serve as the P.K. Yonge Building Emergency Coordinator for the University of Florida. Complete available UF training for Building Emergency Coordinators.
  • Lead annual tours of the school campus with appropriate public safety agencies as defined in s. 365.171 designated as first responders to the school campus and collect recommendations to enhance school safety. 
  • Complete state required school safety specialist training provided by the Office of Safe Schools within 1 year after appointment.
  • Keep current on best practices related to school safety and security.
  • Coordinate and support P.K. Yonge facilities/building services managers to improve campus safety, security, and appearance. 
  • Lead application submission and monitoring of Educational Facilities Security grant.
  • Serve as a member of the P.K. Yonge threat assessment team.
  • Collaborate with Director of Student and Family Services as needed to coordinate responses and interventions 
  • Plan, lead, and report all state-required school drills including fire drills, developmentally- appropriate active shooter drills, and weather emergency drills. 
  • Complete and lead training, review, and reporting of SESIR (School Environmental Safety Incident Reporting) to the Florida Department of Education.  Responsible for timely and accurate submission of SESIR data related to school safety and discipline.
  • Lead and manage campus supervision, traffic, and parking.  Assist with campus supervision before, during, and after the school day. 
  • Lead logistics planning to include scheduling/coordinating on-campus events in collaboration with Athletic Director, coaches, club sponsors, and activities coordinators.
  • Support application and use of internet filtering systems and lead response efforts as needed.
  • Assist with administrative supervision of athletic activities.
  • Train, supervise, and provide lunch/break for the PKY Gate Guard.
  • Monitor and analyze multiple sources of data to monitor effectiveness of systems.
  • Collaborate with P.K. Yonge administrators and school leaders to lead a K-12 school
  • Supporting engagement of College of Education faculty
  • Pursue continued professional development in educational innovations and school safety, as well as school leadership

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

  1. A Master’s degree; candidates with Bachelor’s degree will be considered, but will be required to obtain a Master’s degree within three years of hire.
  2. Florida teaching certification
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and effective strategies for motivating and teaching students with differing abilities from a variety of backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

(1) an earned graduate degree in educational leadership;

(2) valid and appropriate certification in K-12 administration or educational leadership (or eligible for administrative certification in Florida); 

(3) 3+ years of administrative or leadership experience in K-12 schools within the past 5 years, with strong evidence of success;

(4) 5+ years of K-12 teaching;

(5) excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively are essential, as are strong organizational, prioritization and time management skills; and

(6) demonstrated commitment to diversity.
