Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

The Marston Science Library Access Services Assistant functions as a team member of the Marston Science Library Access Services Unit. Primary duties include providing supervisory level desk coverage, processing patron recalls, monitoring the hold shelf, locating and retrieving items for UBorrow from the shelves, tracing any items reported as missing, serving as a Building Emergency Coordinator, and processing supply orders. Responsible for the building, including opening and closing procedures during evening and weekend shifts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

MSL Service Desk - Circulation Supervision

  • Communicates effectively with and provides a high level of customer service to a diverse group of patrons
  • Provides courteous assistance with a variety of research tools
  • Responsible for opening procedures on Saturday and Sundays
  • Provides tactful and timely assistance with patron inquiries by telephone, email, and in-person interaction
  • Possesses a working knowledge of library policies and procedures and is able to assist patrons in all circulation functions
  • Assists library patrons with circulation loan returns and course reserve items
  • Indirectly supervises OPS staff during assigned desk shifts, including training, coaching, and communication of policies; provides feedback on OPS training and performance to Daytime Operations Manager
  • Circulates library items
  • Answers or refers reference questions in person or by telephone
  • Discharges library and course reserve materials
  • Creates temporary guest accounts
  • Answers or refers Interlibrary Loan and UBorrow questions
  • Consults and advises patrons with questions about the Ares course reserve process
  • Answers directional, circulation, and basic reference questions, referring when necessary
  • Assists patrons with printers/scanners, compact shelving, and other technology within the library as appropriate
  • Consults with patrons regarding technology-related questions associated with circulating technology (e.g. iPads, cables, Made@UF equipment, etc.)
  • Serves as point person for responding to patron emergency situations
  • Responsible for the service desk and building during desks shifts on evenings and weekends. Communicates necessary building information/issues that arise during weekend and evening shifts to supervisor and/or other MSL staff and reports immediate building issues to work management
  • Monitors exit gate alarms as patrons enter/exit the building
  • Provides Circulation desk backup support when other staff members are absent
  • Covers additional shifts during exam periods when the library has extended hours

Access Services Support

  • Processes item not on shelf requests for patrons and conducts thorough library searches for books, journals, documents, videos and other library owned items
  • Retrieves and processes the UBorrow requests
  • Processes patron recall and hold requests
  • Processes item not on shelf requests for patrons and assists with searches for missing items
  • Monitors and troubleshoots public printers/scanners
  • Monitors and reports technology issues via the IT ticket system
  • Monitors service desk supplies and forms, requests or replaces items when needed
  • Processes mail for Marston
  • Manages the Marston Lost and Found on a regular basis. Contacts patrons concerning lost items when possible. Liaises with Library Facilities and UPD to ensure distribution of lost items
  • Serves as Building Emergency Coordinator

Reference Services

  • Provides reference services in person and by telephone
  • Assists patrons in use of electronic resources, online catalog, and basic reference materials and methods; provides appropriate referral to area and subject specialists
  • Answers or refers Interlibrary Loan and UBorrow questions

Supply Management

  • Monitors the MSL supply budget
  • Places orders for supplies
  • Reconciles charges with Fiscal Services.

Other

  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned
  • Serves on committees as appointed
  • Participates in staff development opportunities as appropriate

Expected Salary:

Minimum hourly rate at $15.00; Actual rate will reflect experience and credentials

Minimum Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent and two years of library or related clerical/customer service experience; or a bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to interact with diverse library clientele and co-workers in a professional manner
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to interpret call number schemes, retrieve items from the shelves and re-shelve items
  • Ability to quickly learn appropriate technology
