Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision the Research Assistant 1 will perform experiments in a neuroscience lab researching neuromuscular junction formation. This position will utilize a variety of approaches including routine molecular biology, cell biology, immunofluorescence, microscopy, and will use Imaris software.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Perform research work involving isolation of proteins, DNA, RNA; molecular cloning; biochemical characterization. (30%)Perform mouse experiments including colony maintenance, genotyping and muscle study. Perform cell culturing, immunostaining and microscopy. (40%) Collect and record results of experiments. Conduct analysis of samples. (20%) Maintain clear and organized records of experiments in notebooks. (6%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Order laboratory supplies. Maintain equipment utilized in experiments. (4%)Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)

Department: Daily contact with supervisors to discuss research and maintain workflow.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associates degree and 0 to 2 years of experience required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

    Knowledge of commonly used concepts and procedures within the basic sciences. Previous experience working with animals preferred; background in mouse genetics preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills and follow-through.Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible and dependable.Must demonstrate compliance with Case Western Reserve University animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines for animal research.Must demonstrate compassion for animals within Case Western Reserve University facilities and dedication to the Animal Resource Center’s mission. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times.Ability to meet consistent attendance.Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. The lab has sufficient bench space and ample desk space with computers. The lab is equipped with one fume hood for storage of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. The laboratory has dedicated rooms for working with mouse and microscopy. Personal protective equipment, including lab coat, gloves and goggles, will be provided to limit exposure to hazards.

Case Western Reserve University’s animal facilities are accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and is managed according to the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” appropriate Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Public Health Service “Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals." This position, and all animal research personnel, are subject to internal compliance to Animal Resource Center Standard Operating Procedures and to compliance regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, the State of Ohio Veterinary Practice Act, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration regulatory guidelines, US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine regulations and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
