Director for Editorial Services - Georgetown University Office of Strategic Communications

Requirements

The Director for Editorial Services leads the design and execution of Georgetown University's written content including its digital platforms, website, and produced content. The position requires a creative, detail-oriented editorial contributor to develop strategic and compelling content. Utilizing the written voice, the Director is responsible for guiding users through the University's content and strengthening engagement across all its channels. This position is focused on providing a quality user experience by generating great copy to communicate to Georgetown's audiences.

The Director must be well versed in AP style and have the ability to produce and edit material efficiently while ensuring factual accuracy and clarity of presentation. The position will work across all content platforms including print, online, mobile, and social media. The Director is responsible for developing a consistent written style guide and UX writing style guide for the University. The Director is responsible for editorial and story writing while designing and inputting content into WordPress.

  • Production and editorial decisions made by the person holding this position affect the university's long-standing reputation of excellence in education and directly influences how the university is perceived by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Content created or managed by the Director must be timely, accurate, thorough and in keeping with the university's mission, strategic priorities, style guide and policies. Quality and accuracy are necessary in order to gain trust and respect from readers and avoid negative perceptions of the university. Quality content that reflects an active university helps further relations with the media, neighbors, government officials, donors and other key stakeholders. Delivery of interesting online content drives web traffic among stakeholder audiences and heightens the university's visibility and brand.
  • High-quality online content also contributes to high morale among Georgetown faculty, staff, students and alumni and fosters a sense of community among the campuses.
  • Editorial User Experience who is enthusiastic about providing a quality user experience, understands the power of great copy and has experience working across a multitude of projects as an individual contributor. Working closely with the Director of Content Strategy, this person will help define how our users experience our content and editorial offerings.
  • Experience with content management systems and spreadsheet software is required. This person should have demonstrated cross-functional communication skills and attention to detail. Ideally this candidate will have a background in UX research.


Work Interactions

The Director of Editorial Services will report to the Senior Director of Creative Services. The Director collaborates with all members of the Office of Strategic Communications in delivering valuable content to the University. This role will work closely with the Director of Content Strategy, Art Director, and Director of Digital Engagement & Social Media in producing content that supports the Georgetown University story.

Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree
  • Experience writing copy across platforms including print, online, mobile, and social media
  • Excellent writing, copy-editing, proofreading, and fact-checking skills
  • Ability to turn raw content into clear, concise, informative copy
  • Ability to condense longer stories into shorter pieces and to translate stories from one format/platform to another
  • Knowledge of AP style guides and writing formats across digital platforms
  • Knowledge of web infrastructure development to increase web presence integration for editorial partners
  • Experience with Google Analytics or similar program
  • Demonstrated ability to write for Search Engine Optimization
  • Understanding of analytics, SEO, and social media best practices to make editorial decisions.
  • Knowledge of user experience (UX) design best practices for content creation and information delivery
  • Experience with content management systems. Knowledge of Drupal and WordPress is highly desirable


Must be able to:
  • Collaborate with other departments to generate copy that supports communications strategies.
  • Learn new and emerging applications and take on the new roles as priorities change
  • Work with a broad range of people in all levels of the university and community
  • Support multiple projects with tight deadlines


Preferred qualifications:
  • A master's degree in related field
  • Familiarity with Associated Press style
  • Experience in a university setting
  • Experience in marketing
