Position Summary:

Note: Work will take place in Natchez Trace State Park in Wildersville, TN.

The Academic Assistant will be providing support for a doctoral student doing research in the field related to plant life.

The duties of the academic assistant include: conducting fieldwork in outdoor rugged terrain, transporting (carrying/holding) field equipment such as, but not limited to, laptop, camera, field markers, manipulating and measuring items such plants and soil, and being a scribe (assisting with tasks that involve writing). As the research unfolds, the assistant might be asked to assist with other field related tasks.

The Academic Assistant will need to follow all safety protocols and dress code requirements for UGA and the on-site field location, including those for COVID-19.

Applicant needs to be available at the dates/times posted and have reliable transportation to/from the work location.

It is important to note that the majority of the tasks will be conducted in the outdoor environment during the summer months in a forest setting. Please note the temperature in the state of Tennessee can sometimes reach 100 + degrees.

The Academic Assistant may not also provide assistance to said student in another capacity, such as, but not limited to a Personal Care Attendant or academic tutor. Violations of this agreement might result in disciplinary action and/or dismissal.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

Preferred: An interest in Plant Biology, Ecology, or other related subjects. Previous field work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :

Legible handwriting, ability to carry equipment over rough terrain in adverse weather conditions to include high temperatures, understanding and implementing verbal instructions regarding the manipulation of equipment and plants.

Physical Demands:

Lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds for extended distances over rough terrain. Working outdoors in hot summer conditions. Bending, manipulating equipment, writing by hand.
