Description:

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a six-month appointment. The anticipated start date is 31 May 2021 or shortly thereafter.

The incumbent will be responsible for providing support to the Canadian government funded research study entitled “ENRICH: Enhancing Nutrition seRvices to Improve maternal and Child Health in Africa and Asia”. Specifically, you will assist the Principal Investigator, Prof. Sellen, to create written summary reports on midline assessments of maternal and child nutrition and health studies conducted in selected low-income countries.

Duties:

    Provide technical support as a research scientist and program specialist to assist the Principal Investigator, Professor Sellen, in all aspects of study coordination, e.g.: coordination with international and internal research partners on planning and execution of data collection activities; prepare applications for ethics approval; assist with sub agreements and financial reporting; coordinate and reconcile budgets; prepare protocol amendments for ethics approval; and assist to manage all project technical assets, materials, timelines, and work plans.

    Assist the Principal Investigator research design and data collection; e.g.: monitoring for quality assurance, analysis and reporting related to the “midline” phase of above project; including, but not limited to, and as may be needed, a lead role to:

    Develop project management materials, timelines, and work plans; plan and coordinate meetings; prepare partnership documents and meeting notes; prepare, monitor and evaluate research protocols, survey instruments, and data entry tools;Coordinate with international and internal research partners to: design data collection and sampling protocols; prepare and evaluate research protocols, survey instruments, and data entry tools; monitor for quality assurance; develop project management materials, timelines, and work plans; plan and coordinate meetings; prepare partnership documents and meeting notes; Consult with the scientists and other members of the research teams to: review and assist in determining sample size calculations, cluster-randomization designs, study design and methodology and review study protocols where necessary.Lead, coordinate and supervise data management through an ODK platform, cleaning and statistical analysis using appropriate methods as agreed upon with the scientist as required.
    Assist the Principal Investigator in all aspects of analysis and reporting; e.g.: analyze quantitative and qualitative datasets; generate, review, interpret and present results of statistical and qualitative content analysis; request and analyze statistical reports; collate technical documents; generate results and prepare technical reports and presentations.Assist in the interpretation and preparation of reports, working papers, scientific presentations and manuscripts as required. Coordinate all aspects of analysis and reporting, specifically to: analyze quantitative and qualitative datasets; generate, review, interpret and present results of statistical and qualitative content analysis; request and analyze statistical reports; collate technical documents; generate results and prepare technical reports and presentations.Create written summary reports on midline assessments of maternal and child nutrition and health studies conducted in selected low-income countries.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education – PhD in International Nutrition; MD with specialty in obstetrics, gynecology and neonatal medicine and pediatric nutrition.

Experience – at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience in design, management, conduct of large scale, multi-country, complex nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive community- based, gender transformative, cross-sectoral intervention trials in low- and middle-income country settings, with demonstrated academic and research excellence. The candidate should be able highlight their ability to work independently, e.g., leading multi-time zone research teams with at least 50 members, high-level reports for projects in excess of CAD$1 Million, and first-author publications and technical reports; past experience organizing survey teams, facility based data collection, complex data management on Open Data Kit and similar platforms, managing an international project portfolio; all aspects of research contracting, financial management, reporting and dissemination in multiple media channels; and supervising students in research.

Skills – Excellent in communicating effectively and efficiently in oral and written English and at least one of the following other languages: KiSwahili, Bangla. Excellent technical writing for high-level nutrition and development decision makers, donors and implementers strong; exceptional leadership, interpersonal communication, supervisory skills and professionalism in representing and aligning different stakeholder groups collaborating in the field; collegial in working with team members and collaborators; excellent leadership across cultural contexts; proven track record in managing research teams and delivering high quality data analysis under tight deadlines and on budget; postdoctoral level skills in nutrition epidemiology, trial design, cluster-randomisation, randomized controlled trial management, statistical analysis of complex nutrition datasets; and research design skills, including best practices in quality assurance and statistical interpretation. Expert working knowledge of Word, Excel, SPSS, SAS, ODK; knowledge of project management software and other statistical packages such as R, will be preferred.

Other – Demonstrated success in the writing and preparation of manuscripts, presentations, reports, briefs, and scientific abstracts and manuscripts for peer‐reviewed journals. Demonstrated success in leading large research teams. Demonstrated success in creating, administering, managing, reconciling and reporting complex survey research and training budgets. Demonstrated success in coordinating with senior project leaders based in low- and middle-income countries, and understanding the unique needs of partner communities, organizations, and institutions in such settings.
