Applications are currently being solicited for an IT Manager to support activities at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. We are a community of researchers focused on all aspects of quantitative modeling in the life sciences.

The work will focus on providing all aspects of hardware and software management and support, planning and development of computational infrastructure, and user support for Center activities in research, education, and outreach.

A candidate will be expected to work independently while coordinating closely with administrative, research, and directorial members of the leadership team to ensure stable and functional computer infrastructure, now and in the future.

The person in this role will be responsible for such tasks as patching and updating software, updating hardware, diagnosing system ops problems and coordinating with OIT and the NIMBioS community to resolve both hardware and software problems in a timely manner. The person will provide documentation for best-practice protocols for system utilization and respond to user requests for support. The person will manage software needs, including installation and version management, providing instruction to others as needed on relevant systems, programs, and environments. The person will take primary responsibility for system design and implementation relying primarily on open source administration tools. The person will design/build/maintain a heterogeneous network and will document administrative procedures for routine and complex tasks. The person will maintain databases and manage multiple domains, and will work with the Director and OIT to define and implement best practices and standards. Lastly, the person will be responsible for system/network security, maintaining all relevant patches and collaborating with OIT to handle intrusions and any other security issues.


  • A Bachelor’s degree plus 12 years of experience in managing computer networks or a Master’s degree plus 5 years of experience in managing computer operations for a large community
  • Excellent organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to work/communicate with/manage a diverse and multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of Linux, Windows, and other standard operating systems
  • Skill at managing network security
  • Ability to manage Unix/Linux servers including all aspects of security, web, and email services
  • Experience developing systemsupport tools to effectively manage Unix systems
  • Ability to interface with diverse sets of researchers with wide range of computational abilities
  • Ability to provide support for researchers computing on clusters
  • Ability to identify requirements and define/plan and implement requisite solutions to problems
  • Ability to plan/organize and prioritize tasks and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision
Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of current computational methods in one or more areas of the Life Sciences
  • Knowledge of UT IT policies including purchasing and IT security
  • Experience managing LINUX/UNIX ops in a heterogeneous environment
  • Ability to develop and maintain programs and scripts that aid in the operation and automation of admin tasks using various shell and scripting languages
  • Understanding of site reliability engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with developing system tools (preferably using Python, PERL, or Bash)
