  • Position Description:

The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences is looking for two Postdoctoral fellows in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology to work on National Institutes of Health (NIH) and EPA - funded projects study innate immune responses, particularly the interferon system, to protect against viral and non-viral diseases. The laboratory is interested in studying how the interferon system protects against virus infection. In this context, we are focusing on the key transcription factor Interferon Regulatory Factor 3 (IRF3), whose activities are required to inhibit viral replication in vitro and in vivo. We have shown that in addition to performing transcriptional functions, IRF3 also triggers direct apoptosis in virus-infected cells and the apoptotic pathway is critical for its antiviral activity (Glanz et al, Viruses 2020, Chattopadhyay et al Immunity 2016, J. Virol 2013, 2011, EMBO J 2010). We are interested to study, using knockout and knock-in mouse models, how this pathway regulates viral or non-viral diseases. IRF3, upon activation by virus infection, transcriptionally induces many antiviral genes, such as interferons and interferon stimulated genes (ISGs) (Chattopadhyay et al EMBO Rep 2015, mBio 2013). The protein products of these ISGs inhibit specific stages of viral life cycle, thereby inhibiting virus replication. Because all viruses cannot be inhibited by a single ISG, it is important to investigate virus-specific ISGs. Using high throughput screening approaches, we began to identify novel viral restriction mechanisms (Subramanian et al, JBC 2020, PLOS Pathogens, 2018). These mechanisms will be tested in vivo using appropriate viral pathogenesis models. Currently, we have several ongoing projects in our laboratory to study both pathways of IRF3 in viral and non-viral pathogenesis. Interested candidates should apply to this link below. Salaries and compensation will be based on first-authored publications and experience in the research area of our laboratory.

    Organization

Working at The University of Toledo

The University of Toledo is one of 13 state universities in Ohio. We were established in 1872 and became a member of the state university system in 1967. The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio merged July 2006 to form the third-largest public university operating budget in the state.

We offer more than 230 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs at colleges of:

Some of our nationally ranked programs include business, engineering, law, and occupational therapy.

    We also offer:

Main Campus features nine modern residence halls, a gothic bell tower, a Student Recreation Center, a state-of-the-art classroom center in one of our original buildings, Memorial Field House, opening fall 2008, and a football stadium and new Savage Hall basketball and athletic complex, set to open fall 2008.

Health Science Campus is home to graduate health programs and the UT Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, offering innovative treatments for strokes and cancer found nowhere else in the state. The UT Medical Center, also features the new $5.8-million Orthopaedics Center.

At UT, we have researchers working at all levels — from undergraduates to faculty — toward our mission of improving the human condition. In fact, their combined, efforts have led to 125 patents and nearly $60 million in funding and grants. Whether your interest is diabetes, performance management, bio-fuels, or Shakespeare, we welcome you to join us in research.

We also are transforming the regional economy and the world through the UT Science and Technology Corridor, where research and innovation mean business.

And our campuses are quite the happening (and fun) places to be — with 200 student organizationsart exhibitstheater performances, athletic games, and renowned speakers such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

At UT, we are proud Rockets (our nickname), we love our gold and blue (our school colors), and we invite you to visit campus to experience it for yourself.
