Conduct independent research activities under the guidance of a faculty mentor in preparation for a full-time research career.
Planning, data collection, analysis, manuscript preparation, and publication for research studies of the epigenetic and genetic factors that contribute to chronic pain (e.g., temporomandibular disorders).
A PhD in bioinformatics/biostatistics, genetics, neuroscience, psychology, or related disciplines is required, preferably within the past four years.
Demonstrated expertise with the analysis and management of genetic and/or epigenetic data using R or similar statistical environments is required.
Additionally, experience with the following is highly valued:
- Sensory, behavioral, and clinical testing in patients (e.g., pain testing, behavioral tasks, questionnaires) including data collection and analysis.
- Molecular analysis of biological samples.
- Ability to troubleshoot and run specialized experimental and analysis software independently with outside tutorials and mentor guidance.
- Ability to formulate hypotheses, ability to independently conduct analysis and experiments, ability to independently write manuscripts and small grant applications all with mentor guidance.
- Ability to work with undergraduate students and research staff professionally and productively.
- Ability to work with mentor(s) and conduct research as agreed upon between the individual and the mentor.
Min Degree Requirements: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D., M.D., D.V.M.).
Other Credential/Experiential Requirements: The incumbent must be a true post-doctoral fellow registered with the Post Doc Office and per the following requirements:
- The term of this appointment is limited (5 years with a possible extension for an additional year)
- The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, which may include teaching responsibilities.
- The appointment is viewed as preparatory for a full time academic or research career.
- The appointment is not part of a clinical research training program, unless research training under the supervision of a senior mentor is a primary purpose of the appointment.
- The appointee works under the supervision of a scholar or a department at Duke University.
- The appointee has the freedom and is expected to publish the results of his or her research or scholarship during the period of the appointment.
