The purpose of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) is to develop and sustain a community that actively partners with UNC Lineberger to reduce the burden of cancer and eliminate cancer disparities in the state of North Carolina. Its mission is to meaningfully engage the community in UNC Lineberger cancer research, clinical care and programmatic efforts to better understand and serve the population’s needs.

Position Description:

THIS IS A TIME LIMITED POSITION WITH AN ESTIMATED DURATION OF UP TO THREE YEARS.

The purpose of the Community Outreach Coordinator in Lineberger’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) is to communicate information about Lineberger research and community activities and successes among diverse audiences, and to foster improved communication between these audiences. Bidirectional communication is key- that is, from Lineberger researchers to the community, and from the community to researchers. To that end, this position will assist in translating evidence-based research findings into clinical-and community-based practice across North Carolina to reduce cancer burden and disparities. They will disseminate information through various communication channels, including social media, website, infographics, print materials, and online and in-person trainings. The position will tailor information so that it is appropriate for intended audiences (e.g., scientists, general public, Spanish speakers). This position will also be responsible for providing technical assistance to community organizations on Lineberger-related research, clinical care and programs.

The person in this position will also assist in capturing community insights and perspectives about Lineberger related research, clinical care and programs and facilitate ways for Lineberger members to incorporate community stakeholder perspectives into their research. This position will help the COE Office to build Lineberger’s research capacity and infrastructure to conduct community-engaged and health equity cancer research.

This position will assist in developing innovative methods for how to improve communication between these audiences. This could include online, recorded or in person communication channels; the development of presentations and materials; and the planning and implementation of COE-related meetings and trainings.

The position requires substantial capacity to work independently, in a self-directed manner, to identify, manage, and coordinate activities. The Community Outreach Coordinator will maintain good working relationships with the COE Team, Lineberger researchers, community members and stakeholders. Responsibilities of the Community Outreach Coordinator will include, but will not be limited to, networking with community organizations, Lineberger researchers and other stakeholders; developing culturally appropriate research and other materials to communicate with diverse audiences; creating and maintaining relational databases to curate bidirectional communication between the community and researchers; and evaluating activities. The Community Outreach Coordinator will also be responsible for working with Lineberger researchers and community organizations on COE-related proposal development, as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

This position requires a combination of knowledge of community-based participatory research, database and project management, coordination of activities, ability to interact with diverse individuals, and knowledge of grant writing and proposal development processes. This position requires the ability to respond quickly to different requests and to interact with diverse communities in a respectful and beneficial manner.

The person should have excellent communication skills, a professional and courteous manner, demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and practice cultural humility.

The position requires substantial capacity to work independently, in a self-directed manner, to identify, manage, and coordinate activities.
