The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.Essential Job Duties:
The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Crop Plant Physiology. This faculty position will be a 12-month, tenure-track position.
The successful candidate will lead a creative, productive, externally-funded research program bridging discovery of fundamental physiological mechanisms in crop plants with improving crop performance in the field. Research including systems-level, mathematical, and/or modeling approaches to understand complex, whole-plant, physiology is welcomed but not required. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: mechanistic responses and adaptation to water or nutrient deficiency, thermal stress, and elevated CO2; source-sink relationships relevant to yield, product quality, or carbon sequestration; and beneficial interface of the microbiome with whole-plant physiology. Additional key job duties include quality teaching of Crop Physiology to graduate students, effective mentoring of graduate students and other junior researchers, and service to the university and profession commensurate with stage of career.
The successful candidate will join a vigorous and diverse community of fundamental and applied plant scientists in numerous departments at NC State and in the greater Research Triangle, inclusive of several universities and agricultural corporations. Complementary expertise exists among engineers and computational scientists at NC State, who perform research in precision agriculture, remote sensing, big data analytics, machine learning, etc.

PhD in Crop Science, Plant Biology, Biochemistry, or closely related discipline.Other Required Qualifications:
- Deep understanding of whole plant physiology and relevant modern research techniques for crop plants.
- Ability to teach with high quality in the classroom and to mentor students and trainees effectively.
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills, including demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed research in internationally recognized journals.
- At least two years of relevant work experience after the PhD.
- Demonstrated skills in acquiring external funding.
- Prior strong contributions to relevant trans-disciplinary collaborations with diverse people/scientists.
Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
