The Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at the University of Rhode Island seeks to hire a Distinguished Multicultural Postdoctoral Fellow for the Academic Year 2021-2022. Subject to a favorable review of teaching and scholarly activities within the first twelve months, the fellow will transition into a full-time, funded, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor at the end of the first year.

This position is part of a Social Science Diversity & Justice cluster hire and a larger set of coordinated diversity and inclusion initiatives sponsored by the Provost’s office (https://web.uri.edu/provost/files/Agenda-for-Change-2021.Final_.pdf). The cluster hire includes three postdoctoral positions:

-A sociologist specializing in race/ethnicity studies, racialization, and/or racial inequality
(housed in the Sociology & Anthropology Department).
-An anthropologist specializing in the Indigenous peoples of the Americas (housed in the Sociology & Anthropology Department).
-A scholar of crime/criminal justice who addresses race in their research or pedagogy (housed in the interdisciplinary Criminology and Criminal Justice Program).

We aim to hire a cohort of scholar-teachers that excel in academic and/or public scholarship and to facilitate mentorship and professional development towards a tenure-track position. We view mentorship as a multidimensional and reciprocal process. As such, the three postdoctoral fellows will be able to form a peer mentoring group, will have campus offices in the same building, and will have opportunities for collaboration with faculty in home and other departments, such as Africana Studies and Gender and Women’s Studies. The cluster hire’s focus on diversity and justice relates directly to the goals of the Department of Sociology & Anthropology, the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the wider University.

The University of Rhode Island is a Land & Sea-Grant University which sits on/occupies Narragansett land, part of Rhode Island’s long, complicated history of intertwined settlers and Indigenous peoples. Rhode Island has a deep and rich history of critical freedom struggles borne of the state’s involvement in enslaving African and Indigenous peoples, and subsequent multi-century civil rights movements. The state is home to vibrant communities of the African diaspora, with significant populations of people from Cabo Verde, Liberia, and the Caribbean, Latinx and Indigenous populations from the Caribbean and Central America, and Southeast Asian populations from Laos and Cambodia. As the state’s flagship university, our students increasingly come from these diverse communities. The University will be the new home to the Tomaquag Museum, Rhode Island’s only Indigenous museum, expected to open in 2023.

The ideal candidate for the Criminology and Criminal Justice position will contribute to and grow the program’s core focus on criminal justice and criminology as sites of inquiry to examine race, (in)equity, and (in)justice. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated commitment to highlighting issues of racial inequity and promoting anti-racism in their scholarship and/ or undergraduate teaching practices.

While the area of expertise is open, candidates whose research show promise in engaging with one of the following subfields will be given priority: carceral studies; comparative criminology; crimmigration; criminological theory; juvenile justice; program evaluation; queer criminology; transformative justice; and victimology. As an interdisciplinary program that offers our majors elective options from across the College of Arts and Sciences, candidates from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives will be considered.

We seek a scholar-teacher who is committed to the University of Rhode Island’s mission as a learner-centered research university where diversity, fairness, and respect are valued. The ideal candidate would be adept at engaging and supporting students from a variety of backgrounds. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who are under-represented across race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other legally protected basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral fellow would be expected to teach courses on criminology and/or criminal justice topics, advance their research agenda and contribute to program, college, and university service. The teaching load during the year of this fellowship is 1:1. The transition to a tenure-track faculty position will be based on continued interest on the part of the fellow as well as the potential of the fellow to contribute to the teaching, scholarship, and service needs and goals of the department as judged by the departmental faculty and Dean of the College. If the fellow does not transition to a tenure-track position, the University is committed to providing a second year of support in the postdoctoral fellowship position.

Required Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

1.PhD in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a related field with a specialty oriented towards criminology or criminal justice, or ABD with degree (PhD) conferred by Dec 20, 2021.

2.Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in teaching criminology and/or criminal justice topics.

3.Evidence of, or potential for research excellence, as shown by publications, works in progress, and/or presentations, engaged with criminological- and/or criminal justice- oriented questions.

4.Demonstrated engagement with the principles of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

5.Demonstrated potential in mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.

6.Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication.

7.Demonstrated in written communication.

8. Demonstrated ability working with diverse groups/populations.

9.Currently eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

PREFERRED:

1.Evidence of, or demonstrated potential, for specialization in one or more of the following areas: carceral studies; comparative criminology; crimmingration; criminological theory; juvenile justice; program evaluation; queer criminology; transformative justice; and victimology.

2.Demonstrated experience teaching, advising, and/or working with people from diverse backgrounds.

3.Successful engagement with the broader academic and non-academic community.

4.Evident potential to develop an independently-funded research program.

ALL REQUIREMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO POSSIBLE MODIFICATION TO REASONABLY ACCOMMODATE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES.

Organization

The University of Rhode IslandURI Picture 1

Founded in 1892, this land and sea grant university is the flagship public research institution in Rhode Island, enrolling more than 14,500 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students.

Thinking big
URI is home to some of today’s leading innovators, discoverers, and creative problem solvers and is known regionally and worldwide for its big ideas and pioneering research in such areas as environmental studies, neuroscience, biotechnology and life sciences, engineering, marine sciences, forensic sciences, pharmaceuticals, behavioral sciences, and public health promotion. A strong core of traditional academic disciplines provides the foundation for all specialized, professional, and applied areas of study. The University receives about $60 million annually in federal funding for research across 87 undergraduate and 70 graduate degree programs.

Motivated students, engaged faculty

Nearly 23,000 students applied for fewer than 3,300 openings in the 2017 freshman class, which boasts an average grade point average of 3.54. The 17 to 1 student/faculty ratio allows for personal attention and rewarding teaching experiences. Approximately 87 percent of faculty hold terminal degrees. In 2018 URI produced two Fulbright Scholars, five Boren Scholars, a Truman Scholar, and was named a one of the country’s top Gilman scholar-producing schools. URI’s commitment to diversity is demonstrated through its student body, with 43 states and 65 nations represented and 20 percent of students identifying as persons of color, a 65 percent increase since 2008.

Four campuses, one community

URI’s main campus is located on 1,248 acres in rural Kingston, where the campus core — including a quadrangle surrounded by handsome granite buildings — is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Six miles from Rhode Island’s beaches, this campus is conveniently situated along the Boston to New York corridor. The University’s renowned Graduate School of Oceanography is located at the 165-acre Narragansett Bay Campus. The Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Education and Professional Studies brings higher education to downtown Providence. Nearby, the 133,000-square-foot Rhode Island Nursing Education Center URI Picture 2includes unparalleled simulation labs. The W. Alton Jones Campus — 2,300 acres of forests, lakes, and farmland in West Greenwich — provides a secluded setting for academic research, environmental education, business meetings and special events.

Investing in the future
Since 2007, the University has invested $607 million in campus capital projects, including: a $150 million engineering complex, due to open in 2019; Brookside, another new apartment-style residence hall, 2019; a Welcome Center, 2018; the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center, 2017; Beaupre Center for Chemical and Forensic Sciences, 2016; and Avedisian Hall, home to the College of Pharmacy, 2012.

Expertise on demand

The University is home to several centers of expertise that tackle some of society’s most vexing challenges. The George & Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience brings multi-disciplinary research to bear on devastating brain diseases, such as ALS and Alzheimer’s. The Digital Forensics and Cyber Security Center supports state, national, and international public welfare through education, research, training, and service. The Business Engagement Center is the “front door” through which industry taps into research and training opportunities and assistance with intellectual property or technology issues. The R.I. Food Center brings URI’s agricultural roots to the 21st century as a resource for farmers, consumers, retailers, and others across the food industry
