Department Summary:

The Office for Advising Services promotes high quality advising across UNT’s advising units through coordination, training/professional development, and leadership support. Our advising team offers pathways counseling to prospective and current students. The office is located in the Academic Success Center at Sage Hall.

Position Overview:

This position is responsible for providing guidance to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to develop a career path and degree fit. Connects students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position is responsible for creating and implementing programs related to student success and retention.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an advising office counseling students who present with uncertainty of major and/or advising transfer students.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, verbal and written
  • Experience working with multiple departments and/or committee work

Work Schedule:

MON-FRI 8:00 AM TO 5:00 PM; SOME OVERTIME AND WEEKENDS

Provide pre-admission advising for prospective, transfer undergraduate students in multiple settings regarding degree requirements, university policies, and procedures. by evaluating transcripts for applicability in core, best fit majors, prerequisites for majors and major requirements, including transfer course equivalencies.

o:

Provide pathways counseling services to current undergraduate students looking to change or find a new major. Counsel students regarding information about their interests, aptitudes, and abilities and how it translates to major and career.

o:

Maintain accurate knowledge of admission policies, degree programs and general catalog requirements.

o:

Creates and implements programs related to student success and retention and represent advising and support undergraduate recruiting in Texas.

o:

Assist with student referrals and student inquiries to the office and through UNT Advising and Class Concierge.
