Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform research work in medical and related technical areas involving the use of lab skills. The project’s initial objectives include defining how the brain responds to breathing supplemental oxygen at sea level and at altitude and determining whether inflammatory markers are released in the blood in response to supplemental oxygen and changes in barometric pressure in a laboratory setting and in the field. The research assistant will be primarily responsible for carrying out research work, supporting laboratory staff and assisting with laboratory inventory and maintenance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Perform research work in medical and related technical areas involving the use of lab/research skills. May be required to accompany other research staff for visits on campus and at off-site locations including military installations. Assist in collection of data from study participants and maintain clinical research records. Properly collect, store and conduct analysis of human biologic samples. (25%) Enter and maintain records of study variables into electronic database. Clean and prepare database for analysis. (15%)Utilize neurophysiological methods for data acquisition. Verify quality of acquisition and completeness of other physiologic data. (20%)Assist with cleaning, maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment utilized in experiments. Maintain a clean and organized laboratory space. Order laboratory supplies. (15%)Assist with preparation of manuscripts, grant applications and conference abstracts/posters. Record minutes for weekly lab meetings. (15%)

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with principal investigator and senior research staff and continuous contact with upper level research assistant(s) for assignment, debriefing and status updates on weekly goals.

University: Occasional contact with other departments including IT, regulatory departments and facilities to exchange information regarding research.

External: Moderate contact with study participants in the course of conducting research. Occasional contact with vendors to exchange information and maintain inventory and equipment functioning.

Students: Weekly contact with students to assist with task completion.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. May share in the training of students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience/Licensing: Bachelor's degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required. Must be eligible for human subjects (CITI) certification and University Hospitals research credentialing.

REQUIRED SKILLS

    Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the health care field and/or engineering field. Ability to rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Ability to proceed with objectives under moderate supervision.Ability to operate laboratory and clinical equipment or the ability to become proficient within the 90-day orientation period.Knowledge of personal computer (IBM-compatible operating system) with proficiency in statistical software (SPSS), and extensive experience and expertise in PC software such as Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Access etc.) is required. Proficiency with RedCap software or ability to become proficient with REDCap within the 90-day orientation period.Formal academic coursework in physiology preferred.Ability to effectively interact with colleagues, supervisors and research participants face to face.Ability to meet consistent attendance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Clinical, office and general laboratory environment. Possible exposure to hazardous materials, including blood and bodily fluid specimens. May be required to use personal protective equipment, including standard lab coat, gloves and safety glasses when appropriate. Will be responsible for local transportation to off-site locations to assist with recruitment, consenting and data collection duties. May be requested to work evenings and weekends to accommodate research participant availability. Project may require data collection at military installations and would require travel of 1-2 weeks duration.
