Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general supervision, the Research Assistant 2 will plan and carry out the research project in accordance with approved research protocols. The project’s initial objectives include defining how the brain responds to breathing supplemental oxygen at sea level and at altitude and determining whether inflammatory markers are released in the blood in response to supplemental oxygen and changes in barometric pressure in a laboratory setting and in the field. The research assistant will be primarily responsible for planning and carrying out research work, mainly focused on the clinical aspect of research, and assisting the principal investigator to compile data and draft time-sensitive reports to regulatory bodies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Plan and carry out research work in accordance with established and approved protocols, including assistance with blood draws, physical examinations and collection of brief health histories, to conduct a series of experiments that supply information for the project’s objectives of defining the brain response to breathing supplemental oxygen at sea level and at altitude and determining the release of blood inflammatory markers. May be required to accompany other research staff for visits on campus and at off-site locations and military installations. Maintain communication with participants regarding study objectives, scheduling, study-day instructions and follow-up in a timely manner consistent with approved protocols. (25%)Compile data for reports for regulatory body and study sponsor. Train new staff and direct the work of students. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety and regulatory policies, including monitoring of project staff compliance with CITI training, IACUC/IRB/Biohazard training and local institutional research credentialing. (15%)Collect and analyze data from study participants and maintain clinical research records. Utilize neurophysiological equipment for data acquisition. Properly collect, store and analyze human biologic samples. (15%)Create and maintain statistical database of study variables. Clean and prepare database for complex analysis. (15%)May assist in developing improved techniques, projection methods or procedures. Verify quality of data acquisition and completeness of other physiologic data. Make recommendations for development of future human protocols. (10%)

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with principal investigator and senior research staff and continuous contact with other research staff for assignments, debriefings and status updates on weekly goals.

University: Moderate contact with other departments including IT, regulatory departments and facilities to exchange information regarding research.

External: Frequent contact with study participants in the course of conducting research. Occasional contact with vendors to exchange information and maintain equipment functioning.

Students: Occasional contact with students to oversee task completion.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. Train new staff and direct the work of students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in basic science, physiology, or engineering discipline and 1 to 3 years of research experience or Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology program and 2 to 4 years of experience required. Current or prior coursework in clinical training (e.g. nursing, respiratory, radiology, EEG, paramedic) is highly desired. Prior experience with both clinical research and laboratory bench skills is preferred.

Licensing: Current human subjects (CITI) certification required. Must be eligible for University Hospitals research credentialing. Phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, paramedic or other clinical certification and/or licensure is preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS

    Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the health care field. Ability to rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.Ability to establish priorities, work independently and proceed with objectives under general supervision.Ability to operate laboratory equipment or ability to become proficient within the 90-day orientation period.Knowledge of personal computer (IBM-compatible operating system) with proficiency in statistical software (SPSS), and extensive experience and expertise in PC software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Teams, Access etc.) is required. Proficiency with RedCap software or ability to become proficient with REDCap within the 90-day orientation period.Ability to effectively interact with colleagues, supervisors and customer face to face.Ability to meet consistent attendance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Clinical, office and general laboratory environment. Possible exposure to hazardous materials, including blood and bodily fluid specimens. May be required to use personal protective equipment, including standard lab coat, gloves and safety glasses when appropriate. Will be responsible for local transportation to off-site locations to assist with recruitment, consenting and data collection duties. May be requested to work evenings and weekends to accommodate research participant availability. Project may require data collection at military installations and would require travel of 1-2 weeks duration.
