Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Assistant Dean for Student Services and Career Planning is committed to the values and mission towards a diverse, equitable and inclusive work and learning community. The Assistant Dean is responsible for strategic oversight, management and administration of the Office of Student Services and Career Planning. The Assistant Dean serves as an agent of the Mandel School along with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Services in communicating, carrying out and enforcing academic standards and policies governing professional graduate education programs. The Assistant Dean leads efforts to assist students in realizing their graduate degree by providing information and organizing educational support and retention programming for student success. The Assistant Dean helps to facilitate a student-centered learning environment, oversees student organizations, coordinates and advocates for student issues and concerns. The Assistant Dean serves as an integral member of the Associate Dean’s leadership team and represents student affairs concerns on faculty committees and in other parts of the university. The Assistant Dean serves as the School’s liaison to the university offices such as Office of Student Affairs, Office of Equity (Title IX and sexual assault), Career Services Center and Educational Support and Disability Resources. In addition, the Assistant Dean works with University Technology to assure the adequate supports are in place for students who need outside services for disabilities to support student success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Student Support Services: Initiate the development and implementation of new policies, procedures and student support services in response to changes in the characteristics and interest of prospective and current graduate students. Provide ongoing connection and support to students to resolve issues in a timely manner. Meet with any students requesting support in their decisions on programmatic or personal matters affecting their academic success. Work closely with academic advisors, update on academic progress, experiential education activities and any other developments important to student’s overall well-being. Facilitate partnership with university offices and divisions, including Campus Safety, Disability Services, Writing Center, University Student Affairs, International Student Services and Office of Equity to advocate for and share information about available services for students. Serve as student affairs representative for school on the University Grad/Professional BIT council; participate in Care Management meeting for at-risk students. Lead the Dean’s Consultation Committee, which supports students with academic, field education, professional conduct and other non-academic issues. Lead the online and on-campus student support meetings to provide supportive guidance for identified student needs and issues. Consult with Case Western Reserve University Office of Student Affairs Office for student crises and critical needs. Manage/administer Student Emergency Fund; review applications from students about emergency need; approve awards; Continuous oversight of budget; Prepare annual report of student utilization. Coordinate Committee on Students reinstatement requests and hearings, committee meetings from September-April. Prepare student for presentation at hearing; Prepare paperwork for sharing with committee during hearing; prepare record of outcomes and notify student; Share the recommendation by the Committee on Students with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for a final decision. Continually develop, enhance and improve customer-related activities. Continuously assess the quality of student services by researching and monitoring programs at peer institutions to help identify and enhance the experience of students in the school. Promote and generate prompt, courteous services to meet the needs of faculty, staff and students. Assist with communication to students about academic probation, termination, suspensions and dismissals. Co-lead the annual revision of the University Bulletin. Provide appropriate web and print content in collaboration with the associate dean, assistant deans, lead instructors and directors. Work with Registrar and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to interpret academic rules and regulations to staff and students. (40%)Career Planning and Professional Development: Develop and implement a strategic direction for student career planning. Collaborate with the University Career Services Center to assure Mandel students and alumni receive individual and group assistance. Maintain awareness of university and external resources for professional and career development to refer, educate and support students and faculty. Evaluate, develop strategy and implement online and virtual career resources to increase services and opportunities for career planning for students in all formats and degrees and alumni, including but not limited to student memberships in professional organization, licensure exam preparation. Work collaboratively with Mandel School Alumni Affairs Director, Mandel School Visiting Committee to identify professional community mentors, networking opportunities and events, professional development and employment opportunities. Develop and coordinate robust career coaching to students. Oversee, develop and execute career service- oriented programs for students. Lead career programming and professional development for students. Keep informed about current career issues in the field of social work and nonprofit management, effective practices, growth opportunities and job market dynamics. In collaboration with the Office of Outcome Assessment, review the compilation of data for the annual graduate employment survey to monitor, analyze and evaluate student services effectiveness in meeting the needs of students and graduates. (25%)Diversity and Inclusion: Collaborate with the Mandel Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the University Offices of Equity, International Student Services and faculty and school leadership in the development and implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion for Mandel School students. This may include work with but is not limited to specialized student populations such as international students, veterans, LGBTQI students, Underrepresented Minority student groups, students with disabilities and first-generation students. Create, oversee and provide orientation and ongoing support programs for Mandel Council. Serve as the administrative adviser for the Mandel Council and Local International Konnections (LINK) student group that facilitates mutual understanding and sharing of information on cultural practices, philosophies and ideologies for international understanding. (15%) Student Data: Lead efforts to maintain, update and revise University Student Complaint Log. Prepare appropriate reports; Analyze and evaluate retention data to be used in strategic decision-making. Maintain confidentiality of information exposed in the course of business regarding students, student records and confidential reports. (10%)Orientation, Graduation and Scholarships: Lead the processes for second and third year scholarships nominations, student and committee notifications and finalization of recipients of specific scholarships with Student Services Support Staff, Mandel School, Financial Aid, Finance and Administration and Development/Institutional Advancement. Co-lead with the Program Manager of Mandel School Events, the planning, implementation and evaluation of materials and programming for new student orientation and commencement for all Mandel School degree programs and all formats. Participate as needed in commencement activities. (10%)

Department: Daily contact with department colleagues to implement job tasks and exchange information.

University: Frequent contact with other university departments to handle student issues and exchange information.

External: Regular contact with alumnae, community partners and outside social service organizations to assist students in mentorship opportunities and career development.

Students: Regular contact with students to exchange information to support their educational experience at the Mandel School.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Direct supervision of two staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 8 or more years of experience working with students in a higher education setting required. Experience working in or leading a student service effort at the university or school level in social work or nonprofit management is preferred. Leadership roles and demonstrated success in service delivery, program planning and/or management in the nonprofit sector preferred. Experience working in or leading diverse, equitable and inclusive teams and student groups and settings within social work or nonprofit management preferred.

Education/Licensing: Master’s degree required. State of Ohio LISW preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS

    Strong analytical and problem solving skills.Strong program planning and management skills.Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with varied and diverse students, faculty, university administration and other parties. Strong organizational, supervisory, interpersonal leadership and consensus building skills. Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and the ability to exercise good judgment in detailing with problematic situations. Experience in higher education as a manager, leader and innovator. Must be highly motivated, a self-starter and be skilled in project management. Ability to meet consistent attendance.Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General office environment. Some evenings and weekends may be necessary.
