Muskegon Community College, an associate degree-granting institution of higher education, is a center for lifelong learning which provides persons the opportunity to attain their educational goals by offering programs that respond to individual, community, and global needs.

The Chief Diversity Officer will implement a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategy around four cornerstones:


1. Cultural Awareness


2. Workforce/Organization Strategy


3. Cultural Competency and


4. Community Outreach providing leadership and operational excellence in DEI to the internal and external community.


The Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) serves as a catalyst to leverage best practices and resources across campus to promote a culture of inclusion where individuals from all racial and ethnic identities, ages, nationalities, social and economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, religious, political and ideological perspectives, and physical and mental abilities are able to thrive and be engaged. The CDO provides strategic and programmatic leadership for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that advance diversity as a critical component of social and academic experiences.


Successful leadership at Muskegon Community College (MCC) requires a commitment to the College’s mission and vision, participation in the academic, athletic, and artistic life of the campus, and interaction with/service to the community and a consultant to external organizations in the community (i.e. for-profit, not-for-profit). Understanding and respect for, the concept and process of shared governance, integrity in actions, and clear, consistent communication with all constituencies are also critical to success. This person will have a passion for higher education and student success, with a demonstrated commitment and executive level experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion.


The Chief Diversity Officer will be agile, team-oriented, and a professional with a track record of inspiring leadership and guidance for changing mind-sets when needed. The CDO will be the “expert” for the college on all matters pertaining to DEI. This includes and is not limited to day to day and long-term DEI initiatives, as well as working with and serving organizations outside of the institution. The Chief Diversity Officer reports to the President and is part of the President’s Cabinet.




Required Skills

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Masters required in fields such as Business, Educational Leadership, Human Resources, Social Work or Social Science.
  2. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience, in higher education, government, non-profit or for-profit organization with a track record of effective leadership and relationship building in DEI.
  3. Demonstrated use of tact, judgement, and discretion, and ability to relate to people of all ages, races, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to mentoring, developing, and managing collaborative teams.
  5. Gifted public speaking, platform skills and representing the institution professionally in the community and on campus.
  6. Skilled in implementing strategic plans, goals, and procedures with allocated resources and budget.
  7. Critical thinker with the ability to intervene, problem solve and resolve conflicts.
  8. Collect and analyze demographic data for the college and external clients.
  9. Experienced and trained in civil rights investigations.
  10. Proven ability to communicate, build relationships, work with diverse group of employees, and external partners and alumni.
  11. Demonstrated strengths in technology, Microsoft Office, and use of Social Media. Excellent organizational and management skills.
  12. Ability to design, develop and deliver training programs (i.e. online, self-paced, in-person or classroom) to meet internal and external constituents needs.
  13. Employee Development and Succession Planning.
  14. Ability to work away from principal worksite during the day and other travel as required.
  15. Ability to work extended hours during work week and weekends.
  16. A valid driver’s license with approved driving record required.


Essential Function:

  1. Work closely with the President, Board of Trustees, Executive Leadership, and campus community to develop and employ DEI strategy and goals.
  2. Work in partnership with Human Resources to ensure that federal, state, and local laws are adhered to for all protected classes. Educate administration, staff, faculty, and students on legislation. Understanding of general law principles and regulation awareness.
  3. Use economic, business, analytical skills to assess institution demographics to achieve diversity targets (i.e. demographics, U.S. Census. Student Enrollment data).
  4. Build relationships and outreach to campus community (i.e. Student Services, Academic Affairs, Physical Plant) to establish diversity strategy.
  5. Conduct Climate Assessments (i.e. student, staff, faculty, community level) and discrimination investigations.
  6. Design, develop, and deliver training programs (i.e. online, self-paced, in-person or classroom) to meet internal and external needs.
  7. Work closely with Marketing and Communications to design and establish a DEI presence on social media platforms (i.e. Tic tock, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube), print, radio, and television media. Update DEI webpage.
  8. Build relations and work effectively in a multi-union environment.
  9. Upon request, provide consultation, advice and recommend resources to local companies in the process of formulating and implementing diversity initiatives and activities.
  10. Lead and assist in implementing DEI initiatives and strategies for the college.
  11. Plan, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of Cultural Celebrations (i.e. Black History, Women History, Hispanic Heritage, MLK, Jr Breakfast).
  12. Oversee and manage departmental budget.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
