General purpose: Reporting to the Director of Fabrication Studios, the Studio Manager, Fox Wood Shop will help manage the administrative and operational functions of MICA’s Campus-wide Fabrication Studio, the Fox Wood Shop with a particular focus on the advancement of safety, equipment, and facilities in the shop.  Under the guidance of the Director, this position provides technical expertise to students and faculty through curricular engagement and co-curricular initiatives ensuring the highest level of creative fabrication research.  The Fox Wood Shop is a campus-wide resource open to all MICA students (undergraduate, graduate, and open studies students).

Summary of Essential Functions

  • Serve as a comprehensive expert within the field of woodworking for art and design and work with all faculty and students within the area to ensure safe, effective, and advanced practices.
  • Oversee the operations and maintenance of the Fox Wood Shop, ensuring that all equipment functions effectively and safely, the facilities are clean and efficient, procuring all supplies and materials as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop technical operation and safety instructions and guides (and subsequent updates) to be included in the Fox Wood Shop studio manuals.
  • Develop, implement, communicate, maintain, enforce, and update a safety program that complies with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), OSHA standards, and best practices within the Fox Wood Shop.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are operating with the highest level of functionality and safety while making repairs as necessary.
  • Working with the Director of Fabrication Studios, coordinate and collaborate with faculty instructors and other Fabrication Studio staff on day-to-day operations, equipment, and curricular needs.
  • Make necessary purchases of equipment, tools, and materials to ensure the studio is fully equipped; manage resources and supplies.
  • In coordination with the Director of Fabrication Studios, assist with budget management, equipment inventory, and cyclical capital requests.
  • Oversee management and organization of the physical departmental space, and operation of equipment.
  • Conduct research to identify improvements that advance the capabilities of fabrication research within the discipline.
  • Depending on the level of experience and/or aptitude, this position may also be responsible for helping to manage the general operations of the small 2D Prototyping Studio also located in the Fox building.  This work supports fall and spring instruction and student homework access to the 2D Prototyping Studio following campus protocols.  Equipment in the 2D Prototyping Studio includes risograph and other print/copy machines and bookmaking/ binding equipment (and associated software for 2D prototyping processes).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A demonstrated knowledge of materials and techniques used in traditional and contemporary woodworking for art and design
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of industrial table saws, band saws, drill press, jointer, planer, routers, miter saw, portable power tools, and non-power hand tools
  • Demonstrated comprehension of wood fabrication, finishing techniques and processes, green woodworking, steam bending, lamination methods, and joinery
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety regulations and best practices common in art and design production, especially pertaining to the safe use, handling, and management of a diversity of equipment and chemicals with varying levels of hazard
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students; ability to interact with a wide variety of constituencies on and off-campus
  • Strong listening and organizational skills, ability to communicate professionally both orally and in writing with careful attention to detail 
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator  

Minimum qualifications:

  • MFA or terminal degree related to art or design disciplines (applicants without an MFA or terminal degree but extensive experience may be considered)
  • Three to five years of related professional work experience  
  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge and proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of traditional, contemporary, industrial and experimental woodworking equipment and related materials and processes in art and design.
  • Managerial experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • OSHA 10 (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Five or more years of related professional work experience, specifically in fabrication shop management and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with 2d image creation, risograph printers, analog, and digital paper cutters
  • Supervisory work experience
