The Brody School of Department at East Carolina University (ECU) is composed of 18 departments which function to 1) provide health care for the citizens of eastern North Carolina; 2) educate primary care physicians to meet the health care needs of eastern North Carolina, and 3) make medical education available to minority and disadvantaged people. The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences is a primary contributor to the School’s mission of medical education, patient care, research, and community service.
Playing an important role in the Brody School of Department’s academic group practice, the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences consists of the Department Chairman, two Medical Directors of Clinical Services, four leadership core units (Department Administrator, CVS Operations Committee/Section Chiefs, Nurse Administrator, and Vice Chairman and Director of Research), and seven clinical and educational divisions. The primary roles of education (students, residents, fellows and continuing medical education), clinical services (Structural Heart Disease, Electrophysiology & Arrhythmias, Heart Failure, Primary and Secondary Prevention, and Vascular Diseases), research (clinical and basic bench research in cardiovascular clinical care, clinical trials to develop new treatments for cardiovascular disease, educational programs for local, regional, and national health care providers, and wellness and prevention programs), academic affairs/faculty development, and administration (business and clinical support services) are led by the Department Chairman and CVS Operations Committee.
The clinical sections represented in Cardiovascular Diseases include Structural Heart Disease, Electrophysiology & Arrhythmias, Heart Failure, Primary and Secondary Prevention, and Vascular Diseases. There are currently 37 MD and Ph.D. faculty members, 15 Fellows, and 16 Physician Extenders and Cardiovascular Sciences Technicians.
A clinical, administrative, and research support staff numbering nearly 100 CSS and SPA employees provide support to the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences’ faculty and learner groups. Subspecialty fellows (fully trained internists receiving training in a clinical subspecialty within Cardiovascular Sciences and Internal Department) currently number fifteen.
The majority of the department’s educational, clinical, and research activities take place within the context of the East Carolina University Brody School of Department and the Vidant Medical Center. The central component of the medical center will be the new East Carolina Heart Institute (ECHI). Designed to be a world-class cardiovascular destination offering state-of-the-art medical technology, education, and research in one location, the East Carolina Heart Institute is composed of three main partners Vidant Medical Center, East Carolina University, and private practice practitioners. The Institute is committed to superior patient care, collaborative research, and continuous training and education. The East Carolina Heart Institute is the umbrella name for the two facilities that make up the Institute.

The primary focus of this position will be Cardiology phone triage and rotating Imaging coverage.

Clinical—The Staff Nurse of Patient Scheduling will review faculty outpatient clinical schedules, ensure patient appointments are appropriately scheduled and appointment slots are utilized appropriately to maximize efficiency. This position will gather clinical information on patients and review data prior to patient office visits as well as identify areas needing physician input at the time of visit. The Staff Nurse of Patient Scheduling will discuss new patient referrals with the referral physician office staff to ensure all pertinent clinical information is available. This position will maintain good communication lines with the referral physician and the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences. The Staff Nurse in the Scheduling Hub regarding scheduling protocols and work with faculty to find additional patient appointment slots as needed to ensure patients are evaluated promptly. This position communicates regularly with nursing staff when changes or additional patient information becomes available. The Staff Nurse of Patient Scheduling assists as needed with ECU quality improvement measures and documents findings on designated assessment forms. This reviews results of patient procedures and reports abnormal test results to attending physicians and assists Patient Services in getting the authorization of cardiovascular procedures that require specific clinical information.
Patient Care Rounds – Accompanies the Attending Cardiologist, Fellow, Intern, Students, and Staff during patient care rounds to assist with the determination of a plan of care for each patient. Makes nursing recommendations concerning patient care. Generates and maintains patient care data log including patient history, referring and primary physicians, referring facility, and daily plan of care. Assist Cardiologists, Residents, interns, and students in identifying appropriate resources for patient care needs. Identifies Cardiac Surgery and Transplant patients and communicates those identified to Surgical and Transplant Services coordinators. Communicates to the Cardiology team relevant information concerning patients or patient transfers during rounds. Communicates to Nursing and Ancillary staff daily plan of care. Assists with the identification of daily discharges and assists with the facilitation of those discharges.
Independent Patient Care Rounds – Identifies potential clinical research candidates, screens and enrolls them into cardiology clinical trials. Determines if those procedures/tests identified in general rounds were ordered in an expeditious manner. Helps determine any problem which may interfere with the execution of the plan of care and assists with resolution. Assists with obtaining results of procedures/tests and communicates findings with attending Medical and Nursing staff. Assesses patient/family need for Cardiac Rehabilitation, Social Work, Physical or Occupational Therapy, Psychological assistance and make appropriate referrals as needed. Clarifies for Nursing and Ancillary staff questions concerning the plan of care. Assists with assessment of patients to determine changes in patient condition or response to therapy and communicate those findings to appropriate Medical Staff.
Schedules inpatient procedures and consultations – Contacts the appropriate hospital staff to coordinate inpatient procedures as needed. Communicates with other specialties to request consultations as needed.
Teaching—The Staff Nurse of Patient Scheduling will incorporate teaching into the daily scheduling routine with Patient Services Staff in the scheduling hub and with patients as needed. Ongoing clinical staff education will also be expected by the Staff nurse of Patient scheduling.
Discharge Planning – Schedules outpatient procedures as needed. Communicates regularly with Outreach Nurse Clinician about the plan of care on all referral or transfer patients. Ensures the Attending cardiologist is aware of daily discharges so that letters and or phone calls to primary physicians can be made concerning patient hospital course and plan of treatment at the time of discharge.
Orientation – Assist with the orientation of new or rotating physicians or student staff. Provides written Cardiology guidelines. Assist in the daily supervision of Residents and Students in learning routine operating procedures and processes affecting Cardiology Services.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Graduation from state-accredited school of professional nursing and licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
