The Position:
San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE), one of the largest noncredit institutions in the California Community College System, was founded in 1914 on inclusion and social justice principles. Students come from across 159 countries and find a positive learning environment for every skill level at SDCCE.

Applications are now being accepted for Dean of Child Development and Emeritus Programs at San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE). Under the SDCCE Vice President of Instruction, the Dean is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and managing the noncredit Child Development and Emeritus Programs at all SDCCE campuses and off-site locations. This includes advocating for all SDCCE programs, collaborating with program chairs, coordinating class schedules and faculty teaching assignments, curriculum development, staff development, and budget and strategic planning. The Dean develops and maintains community and industry relationships relevant to their programs [Child Development is a CTE program]. They participate in SDCCE's governance and decision making. The incumbent also serves as the resident Dean for the CE Mesa Campus, located on the Mesa College Campus in Linda Vista, San Diego.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Provide effective leadership in planning and administering the Child Development and Emeritus programs.
  • Promote and support policies, actions, and activities that foster an institutional culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, classified professionals, and academic leaders to develop long- and short-range goals for the program, including alignment with SDCCE’s strategic plan and other planning documents and processes.
  • Prepare staff assignments and schedules in accordance with established District policy.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, classified professionals, and academic leaders to support curriculum development and review at both the course and program levels within SDCCE and the District (i.e., transitions from noncredit to credit).
  • Work collaboratively with program chairs and administrators to hire, supervise, evaluate and support faculty and classified professionals.
  • Plan, coordinate, and provide orientation and in-service education for the professional development of assigned staff.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, program chairs, and administrators in aspects of program management, including budgeting, enrollment management, schedule development, and program review.
  • Understand and contribute to SDCCE’s and the District’s participatory governance structure and collective bargaining environment.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with departments and programs within SDCCE, district, credit colleges, community, region, and industry and professional organizations.
  • Apply local, state, and federal regulations to your program’s instructional programs, courses, lab safety, and activities.
  • Knowledge of current state initiatives and legislative mandates related to Career and Technical Education (CTE) and associated funding sources such as Strong Workforce, Perkins, etc.
  • Knowledge of current state initiatives and advocacy efforts for Emeritus programs.
  • Provide direct support to students as needed to resolve student concerns and make referrals as appropriate to SDCCE resources.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the resolution of student, instructor, and staff conflicts, complaints, and grievances.
  • Develop annual budget recommendations according to established procedures; monitor and control assigned program budgets; initiate special fund requests.
  • Coordinate and direct special projects as assigned; initiate studies and conduct analyses as necessary to determine the need for new or modified course offerings, programs or services.
  • Prepare reports and make presentations as necessary; assure the preparation, distribution and maintenance of required reports, records, and files.
  • Represent the District and participate at the local, state, and national levels in organizations and activities that improve, promote, and publicize instructional programs.
  • Work collaboratively and transparently with the VPI and other administrative leaders.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, classified professionals, and staff.


  • Qualifications:
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    In compliance with policies adopted by the Board of Trustees, applicants for
    this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
    1. Possession of a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited
    institution; AND,
    2. One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience
    reasonably related to the administrator’s assignment.


    Desired Qualifications:
    The successful candidate will have established the highest level of professional competence evidenced by a combination of education, training, and/or experience related to Child Development/Emeritus or similar instructional programs, and campus management which clearly demonstrates the following:

  • Instructional Program Development. Demonstrated experience aligning and growing instructional programs based on the organization’s mission, community needs, resources, student outcomes and success, and through the use of data to inform decisions.

Demonstrated cultural competency, an understanding of adult students and staff’s diverse backgrounds, and a demonstrated commitment to the pursuit of social justice and systemic change to serve all students through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Project Management. Demonstrated experience initiating, implementing, and coordinating multiple projects and priorities while meeting timelines.

  • Data Analysis: Demonstrated use of data to inform decisions.

  • Campus Management. Demonstrated experience serving as a campus, building, site or operations manager.

  • Resource Management. Demonstrated experience taking an entrepreneurial perspective pursuing alternative funding sources.

  • Communication. Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining open communications regarding resources, priorities, and expectations. Effective problem-solving skills as well as strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Collaboration. Demonstrated experience building and leveraging networks and partnerships to advance the mission, vision, and goals of an institution.

  • Budget Management. Demonstrated experience developing and administering operating budgets, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

  • Personnel Management. Strong and effective interpersonal skills in working with district faculty and administration to ensure compliance with state and local policies and procedures.

  • Professionalism. Demonstrated courage to take risks, make difficult decisions, and accept responsibility.


  • Licenses:
    Training and Experience:

  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: qualification for a California Community College Supervisor Credential and three years of increasingly responsible and directly related management or supervisory experience in an institution of higher education.
    Both of the following: (a) Master’s degree; AND (b) One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment.

  • Pay Information:
    Range 18 ($9,033.99 - $14,485.37) per month based on the current Management Salary Schedule.

    Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the Management Employees Handbook. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime.
