Communications Specialist (Limited-Term)

University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Communications Specialist (Limited-Term).

Applications will be accepted until 5/23/2021.

Inspired by Notre Dame's mission, our world-class faculty and students are pursuing globally significant, solutions-oriented research in line with President Jenkins' vision: “A great Catholic University for the 21st century, one of the preeminent research institutions in the world." To that end, Notre Dame Research (NDR) supports and encourages innovation in more than twenty core facilities, as well as in a number of key areas of research, including cancer, environmental change, global health, and many more.

The Notre Dame Research Communications (NDRC) team provides strategic support and guidance, as well as execution, for ND's research communications needs, especially within its 24 reporting units. This role specifically supports two of those units, the Center for Research Computing (CRC) and the Children's Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI), on grant-funded, limited-term work.

Center for Research Computing Grant
  • For 50% of the time, the Communications Specialist will support a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded grant, which will work to enhance cyberinfrastructure for and in between NSF's Major Facilities.
As part of this work, the Communications Specialist will manage the project website through ND's CMS, Conductor, ensure all information is up-to-date, relevant news items are imported, and analytics monitored on a regular basis. The Specialist will identify and then write and edit research stories for dissemination on the website, in newsletters, on social media, and more. The Specialist will manage related social media channels (LinkedIn and Twitter), including creating content, engaging in conversations, and moderating a closed LinkedIn Group on a regular basis. As the project develops, an e-newsletter, videos, digital signage, and other outreach methodologies may be explored, which the Specialist would then take the lead on managing.

Children's Environmental Health Initiative: Building GIS Capacity Grant
  • For the other 50% of the time, the Communications Specialist will support the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)-funded Building GIS Capacity grant, which aims to build technical capacity within Health Departments to use GIS for heart disease and stroke prevention.
As part of this work, the Communications Specialist will lead and moderate conversations within a closed Basecamp community, ensuring relevant content is shared, questions are answered, and issues are resolved in a timely manner. The Specialist will mine this content for potential research stories, which they will then write and edit in an engaging and visually compelling manner for wider dissemination on CDC social and news channels. The Specialist will prepare these social items for use by CDC as part of a related social campaign. The Specialist will also work to support the recruitment of new community members by designing and creating targeted outreach materials, including digital signage, fliers, and more. As the project develops, an e-newsletter, digital signage, LinkedIn, and other outreach methodologies may be explored, which the Specialist would then take the lead on managing.

As part of this grant, the Specialist is expected to work collaboratively with the NDRC team, including under the tutelage of specific team members, as well as to support and collaborate with CEHI, CDC, CRC and NSF team leaders.
