The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) invites applications for the Associate Director for Institutional Research within the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.  UTK is the state’s flagship research institution, enrolling 30,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.  Located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, UTK is committed to serving the state and nation through excellence in learning, scholarship, and engagement.

The mission of the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment (OIRA) is to provide accurate and reliable data to university administrators, departments, and faculty to illuminate and inform their decision-making.  Our key values are quality, integrity, leadership, and service. 

OIRA is headed by an Assistant Provost and Director, with two associate directors.  This position serves as the primary supervisor for the institutional research function within OIRA. 

  Duties include:                                                                                                       

  • Plan and distribute institutional research responsibilities which includes: planning yearly projects, project assignment and coordination, monitoring project status, assigning ad-hoc reporting, and conducting quality assurance of projects.
  • Supervise and oversee the institutional research team (all institutional research analysts and graduate assistant) which includes: individual meetings, team meetings, and performance evaluations.
  • Conduct descriptive and analytical studies and produce ad-hoc reports pertaining to faculty, students, staff, and the instructional process. 
  • Coordinate with campus partners and the UT System, and represent OIRA on university committees and work groups.
  • Function as the university’s IPEDS Keyholder.
  • Serve as backup leadership in the absence of the Director.
 



Qualifications
Education and Experience

Required: Master’s degree in Behavioral Sciences, Education Research, Statistics, or closely related fields involving quantitative methods of research, and five or more years of experience in a higher education setting (including supervisory experience).

Preferred: Relevant Doctoral degree.  Ten years of experience in a higher education setting (including three or more years of Institutional Research experience).  Five years of supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required:

  • Knowledge of the field of institutional research
  • Knowledge of aspects of the administration and operations of an institution of higher education
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and administration at all levels
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time
  • Knowledge of research design, methodologies, and statistical analyses
  • Ability to effectively present and defend research results orally and in writing
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Experience using SQL to extract data
  • Familiarity with SPSS, SAS, or other statistical software
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
 Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Banner student systems
  • Experience with online visual reporting tools such as SAS VA, Tableau, Power BI
