Occupational Summary:

Coordinate technical activities in the Biomedical Engineering Department's undergraduate teaching laboratories, which include cellular and molecular engineering, physiology, electronics, neural engineering, biomechanics and biomaterials laboratories.

Work Performed:

    Work with a diverse team in Biomedical Engineering to run an extensive array of undergraduate laboratory exercises in cellular and molecular engineering, physiology, electronics, neural engineering, biomechanics and biomaterials laboratories.Maintain order in the laboratories by cleaning, organizing, and mentoring students in good laboratory hygiene. Assist senior laboratory administrators and faculty in the development of new laboratory exercises for new and existing courses. This may include conducting and evaluating prototype labs, and recommending and/or making necessary changes in materials, techniques, or procedures. Instruct and supervise student teaching assistants, including planning lab coverage and leading preview sessions. Attend and serve as an expert in laboratory sessions. These sessions often run into the evening.Keep laboratory facilities and procedures up to date and in keeping with the department's strategic planning.Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, e.g. standard electronics bench equipment, mechanical testers, and others related to microbiology and genomics. Assist students with proper, safe use of laboratory instruments.
    Serve as needed as teaching assistant to ensure full coverage of teaching needs.
    Assist as needed in all BME teaching laboratories. This includes dissections of frogs, rats, and pigs. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

Some experience in at least several of our laboratories: electronics, biomechanics, biomaterials, electrobiology, microbiology, genomics, cellular engineering, molecular engineering.

SKILLS:

Excellent analytical, organizational and communications skills are required.

At least several of the following: Basic electronics and associated instrumentation. Basic mechanics and associated instrumentation (e.g. tensile testers, rheometers). Sterile technique. Physiological measurements (e.g. metabolic rate). Experience with analytical instrumentation for molecular biology. Knowledge of business & operational matters, competence in applying general personnel practices, applying budgeting principles, and coordination of research and/or teaching laboratories or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Ability and desire to learn quickly in a dynamic environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires knowledge of biological laboratory exercises, techniques and procedures generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in biology, botany, zoology or a directly related field.

Experience

Work requires 1 year of laboratory experience to acquire skills necessary to develop and implement biological laboratory exercises, supervise and instruct teaching assistants, students and lab personnel and manage overall operations of the laboratory.
