The NC State College of Education leads the way in North Carolina in preparing professionals, conducting research, and engaging communities to improve educational outcomes for all learners across the state and beyond. With two-thirds of its faculty grant active and over 120 funded research projects totaling over $90-plus million, the college ranks No. 1 in education research productivity in North Carolina and among the Top six percent of colleges of education in the nation.

During the 2019- 2020 fiscal year, the faculty brought in over $30 million in new funded research. The entire college is engaged in a transformative process to become an anti-racist organization. It is composed of three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 130 faculty members and 90 professional and support staff. The college’s over 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students study across 50-plus degree programs that deliver highly engaged and personalized academic experiences that prepare them to lead in the field of education.

This position will be housed in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS) which comprises over 30 full-time faculty members, 300 undergraduate students, and 200 graduate students. The department offers a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Learning Sciences with specializations in Educational Equity; Educational Psychology; Elementary Education; Learning, Design, and Technology; Literacy and English Language Arts Education; and Social Studies Education. It awards Master’s programs in Special Education and the Arts of Teaching, as well as undergraduate programs in Elementary Education (emphasizing mathematics and science) and Middle Grades English Language Arts and Social Studies Education.

The Department of TELS shapes the field of education by engaging in research that addresses current challenges by:

  • Participating in cross- disciplinary work that deals with real problems in forward-looking ways; and
  • Preparing professionals who are committed to equity, demonstrate effective pedagogies, and leverage digital technologies to enhance learning.

Through our bachelor’s, master’s, Ph.D., and certificate programs, the department exemplifies an innovative merging of teacher education and the learning sciences that results in new pathways for teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service.

Departmental Honors:
For the second straight year, NC State’s College of Education ranked in the Top 40 among all graduate colleges of education in the nation and had multiple graduate degree programs ranked in education specialty categories in the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate School Rankings.

The NC State College of Education is tied at No. 37 out of 438 graduate colleges of education in the nation surveyed, which places the college among the Top 8% nationally. Among just public colleges of education, the college is tied at No. 26 in the nation.

Diversifying Population:
North Carolina is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. In 2015, 32% of state residents belonged to a minority group. Urban areas, in particular, have seen significant demographic shifts in recent years.
Between 2000-2010, rural areas experienced a notable decline in the Non-Hispanic Black population, while urban areas saw large increases. During that same time, the Asian population grew by nearly 100,000, with almost all growth in the Triangle and Charlotte. The Hispanic population grew statewide, but with the largest growth occurring in the Triangle, Charlotte, and Fayetteville in addition to the more rural Sampson and Lee counties.

The Opportunity:
The NC State College of Education invites applications and nominations for the inaugural Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Educational Equity. The Goodnight Distinguished Professor must demonstrate a genuine commitment to the land-grant mission of NC State and the research, teaching, and engagement goals of the College of Education. We expect the Goodnight Distinguished Professor to be a leader in the College’s commitment to equity.

The Position:
We invite applicants with a unique and promising approach to improving equity in education. We are especially interested in applicants who engage in collaborative work to increase educational opportunity and student success for all by linking research, policy, and practice. We welcome interest from scholars from a wide range of disciplines and theoretical traditions who work across content knowledge domains to creatively ameliorate the effects of inequalities in education; especially in mathematics education, literacy education, or science education.

Conceptual and methodological threads within this scholar’s work could include, but are not limited to: QuantCrit, Community Engaged Scholarship, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies, Critical Race Theory, Critical Literacies, Critical Policy Analysis, Interrogation of Power and Identity, Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, Participatory Methodologies, Cultural Methodologies, and BIPOC Populations.

The inaugural Goodnight professor will hold an appointment at the rank of professor with tenure in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences and with the opportunity for affiliation through scholarship and research with the College’s William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and/or Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research.

The Goodnight Distinguished Professor is expected to make significant contributions to advancing educational equity through research, teaching, mentoring, extension and service.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Earned doctoral degree in education or related field.

  • Demonstrated high impact interdisciplinary and collaborative research;
  • Demonstrated sustained commitment to educational equity and opportunity for marginalized and minoritized populations;
  • Outstanding record of increasing access to high-quality teaching and mentoring for students underrepresented in higher education; and
  • A record of sustained, equity-focused partnerships;
  • Demonstrated commitment to areas of work with potential applications and/or implications for addressing critical issues in equity in North Carolina.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to digital equity and multiple forms of diversity;
  • Exemplary record of externally funded research;
  • Demonstrated success in forming national and state collaborations and networks that improve educational success;
  • Demonstrated record of developing ideas and innovations that have become a part of the practices of communities, intermediary organizations, and/or schools.
