Stanford University's Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC), part of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), seeks a talented individual to serve as Communications Manager responsible for implementing content strategies that promote the research, initiatives and expertise of APRRC scholars. APARC, Stanford's hub for the interdisciplinary study of contemporary Asia, addresses critical issues affecting the countries of Asia, their regional and global affairs and U.S.-Asia relations. The Center produces policy-relevant research, provides education and training to students, scholars and practitioners, and strengthens dialogue and cooperation between counterparts in the Asia-Pacific and the United States. APARC encompasses six regional and thematic programs that advance its research agenda and support its mission. The Center and its programs are a gathering place for leaders from academia, business, government and the social sector, as well as for community members to examine timely, policy-relevant topics that shape contemporary Asia and are of mutual importance to the United States and Asian nations.

Reporting to the Center's Associate Director for Communications and External Relations, the Communications Manager will elevate APARC's profile as a leading Asia research and education hub. Core responsibilities include writing and producing editorial content for print and digital formats such as news stories and press releases, social media copy, video recordings and photos from our events, and audio/video clips and interviews; providing editing and message development support to program staff; maintaining the Center's website and providing editorial guidance to staff in managing their program websites; curating and producing the Center's e-newsletters; managing and growing the Center's social media channels, producing digital content to engage users, and optimizing social content delivery; assisting with donor and other correspondence; working collaboratively with communications colleagues at FSI; and assisting in developing relationships with communications and marketing professionals across campus and beyond.

We are looking for an organized, motivated storyteller who can balance routine communications outputs with experimental, new strategies to showcase the full range of the Center's work. The ideal candidate is a strong writer who is able to make academic research accessible and inspiring, has a passion for engaging target audiences through a combination of analytics and compelling content, is enthusiastic about new storytelling techniques and comfortable working with multiple communications platforms and tools.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop, execute and oversee written communications of moderate complexity, including presentations, speeches, news stories, web content, talking points, and correspondence and social media posts.
  • Participate in regular meetings of key researchers with media relations needs to develop strategies and tactics for facilitating eective communications.
  • Assist in identifying and maintaining professional relationships with key press and community leaders.
  • Assist in preparing content for internal or external newsletters. Understand email and digital content distribution.
  • Identify individuals/groups to attend and/or speak at public meetings or other events.
  • Coordinate media, community or government relations, and ensure logistics and preparations are handled.


To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Master's degree is desired.
  • Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/ne manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/le paperwork.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
  • On call and ability to respond 24/7.
