NURSE PRACTITIONER / PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (UT Health RGV Surgery & Women's Specialty)

Scope of Job:
Nurse Practitioner:
Works under moderate supervision of a physician to provide advanced practice nursing care and treatment within UT Health RGV surgical team and/or board recognized specialization.

Physician Assistant:
To provide primary health care services in a clinical setting under the supervision and direction of a primary care physician in one of the following areas: adult health and/or adolescent health. Responsible for the performance of tasks of a standardized nature which are complex and require considerable experience of specialized training, but which do not constitute the practice of medicine.


Description of Duties:
Nurse Practitioner:
• Provides outpatient and/or inpatient evaluation and treatment of well care, illness and injuries.
• Performs laboratory review and modifies treatment plan as indicated by laboratory findings.
• Obtains and records complete medical history.
• Assesses patient database and identifies biopsychosocial needs and make appropriate referrals.
• Performs routine and specialized physical examinations according to departmental protocols.
• Prescribes medications and other treatments within the APRN scope of practice.
• Formulates appropriate differential diagnosis.
• Orders and interprets diagnostic and laboratory studies.
• Develops and establishes treatment plan and participates in interprofessional care.
• Follows up and evaluates client status.
• Maintains accurate, legible, and confidential records.
• Participates in quality and safety organizational programs and reviews.
• Counsels and educates patients regarding health maintenance and disease prevention.
• Initiates, designs, and presents educational programs for patients, clinic staff and other audiences.
• Performs related duties as required.

Physician Assistant:
• Assess, plans, and provides patient care under the supervision of a physician.

• Performs pertinent physical examinations.

• Obtains and records complete medical history.

• Performs routine and specialized physical examinations with assessment of normal and abnormal findings.

• Formulates appropriate differential diagnosis.

• Orders and interprets diagnostic and laboratory studies.

• Develops and establishes treatment plan in accordance with established protocols of the direction of the supervising physician.

• Follows up and evaluates client status.

• Maintains accurate, legible, and confidential records.

• Participates in quality assurance reviews.

• Counsels and educates patients regarding health maintenance and disease prevention.

• Initiates, designs, and presents educational programs for patients, clinic staff and other audiences.

• Assists in public/campus awareness of Student Health Services.

• Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Nurse Practitioner: Master’s degree from an accredited school of nursing. Physician Assistant: Master’s degree from an accredited university in a recognized field of science or an accredited education program for physician assistants.

Preferred Education:
N/A

Licenses/Certifications:
Nurse Practitioner: Current RN licensure from the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners and approval from the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners to practice as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Physician Assistant: Current PA licensure from the Texas State Board of Physician Assistants; Current Certification from NCCPA.

Required Experience:
Nurse Practitioner:
One (1) year of experience in inpatient or outpatient nursing.

Physician Assistant:
• None, or
• One (1) year of experience as a Physician Assistant in one of the following areas: adult health, adolescent health, or obstetrics and gynecology with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.


Preferred Experience:
Nurse Practitioner:
Experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner.

Physician Assistant:
Experience as a Physician Assistant in one of the following areas: adult health, adolescent health, or obstetrics and gynecology


Equipment:
Nurse Practitioner:
Use of standard office equipment. Use of medical equipment as required.

Physician Assistant:
Standard medical and surgical instruments and equipment. Personal computer and standard office equipment.


Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Ambulatory care clinic / health care facility conditions with possible medical or psychiatric emergencies. Exposure to all common diseases. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. May require some travel.

Physician Assistant:
Knowledge of methods and procedures in the field of general medicine and of the principles of the development, implementation, and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.
