As a unit within the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, University Housing promotes the success of the whole student. With over 9,000 residents, 15 living and learning Villages, a residential curriculum, and conference operations, University Housing strives to create a preeminent residential experience. Essential Job Duties:

The Village Director is a full-time, 12 month, Master’s degree-required position. This position provides strategic planning, management, and administration of a living and learning community, called a Village, at NC State University. Villages can be interest-based, academic, or invitation-only, and vary in size between 70 to 750 students. The full-time Village Director provides leadership over the day-to-day experiences and operation, as well as long-term visioning and direction of the Village, and is viewed as a resident expert in the Village’s themed subject matter(s).

A Living and Learning Village is a place where students, staff, faculty are engaged around common learning outcomes to think and do in a shared residential environment. Villages provide connected curricular and co-curricular experiences to foster a sense of belonging, cultivate an intellectually enriching environment, and support the development of the whole student. As content-area professionals, Village Directors sustain all aspects of the program’s day-to-day operations, programmatic leadership and long-term vision for Village enhancement and growth. The Village Director creates and implements the co-curricular educational experience related to the thematic and pedagogical focus of their particular village.

As one of our 15 Living and Learning Programs, the Impact Leadership Village provides experiential learning for approximately 100 NC State University students with a passion for Relational Leadership and community service. The Village Director works closely with campus partners in the Shelton Leadership Center and the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement to develop the Village curriculum. Collaboration helps Village participants develop their own leadership capacity and philosophy through practical application of the Relational Leadership Model to real world issues utilizing connections with peers, faculty, staff, and industry professionals. In collaboration with the Shelton Leadership Center, the Village Director co-teaches two sections of SLC 101, “Community Leadership” for students in their first year of participation in the village. The collaboration is responsible for course development, delivery, and assessment of SLC 101. The Village Director is responsible for scaffolding curricular components with co-curricular experiences based on student learning outcomes. The course culminates with a team based capstone project consisting of a Community Action Plan to propose a new community service initiative or event that aligns with the group’s area of interest for community service. In the spring semester, the Impact Leadership Village Director may also offer a Village-restricted section of SLC 401, “Independent Study in Leadership Theory Application,” for up to five students interested in pursuing an applied project in leadership theory for course credit.

Reporting Structure:
The Village Director formally reports to the Director, Residential Learning, but may also have reporting expectations to strategic campus partner(s) identified within a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Position Duties & Responsibilities

The Village Director will be responsible for the following primary duties:

Village Mission & Student Development

  • In collaboration with the Residence Life team, cultivate intentional interactions connected to a residential curriculum
  • In consultation with the Assistant Director for Assessment, Research, and Evaluation, assess the Village experience.
  • Maintain high visibility in the community by holding office hours, attending events, and through daily interactions that foster positive relationships and help develop a sense of belonging and connectedness within both the Village community and the NC State University community.
  • Implement a distinctive experiential living and learning environment as defined and outlined by Theorists Kolb, Baxter-Magolda, and Inkelas using the Best Practices Model for Living-Learning Communities in the text, Living-Learning Communities That Work: A Research-Based Model for Design, Delivery, and Assessment.
  • Develop and implement learning outcome-specific programs and experiential learning opportunities that align with the residential curriculum and Village mission with special emphasis on offering activities that promote learning and include service to foster creativity, critical thinking, and reflection.
  • Provide Village residents with information about transitional opportunities and experiences for second year and beyond.
  • Demonstrate ongoing development of skills associated with current and evolving research on Village topical area

Crisis and Resident Behavior

  • As needed, support the Residence Life team in crisis response and management implementing restorative justice practices
  • Serve as a resource and make referrals for residents and staff experiencing personal challenges and crisis

Administration

  • Maintain accurate records and complete annual reports for assessment and executive summaries.
  • Provide budget oversight for the Village community, including budget proposal, tracking and monthly reconciliation, marketplace ordering and processing of receipts.
  • In collaboration with University Housing and DASA Marketing & Communications, develop and maintain the village website, marketing materials, a branding plan, capture student testimonials, photo and video documentation, and maintain an active social media presence.
  • Coordinate Village recruitment activities in tandem with University and Campus Partner sponsored outreach in collaboration with the Associate Director, Residential Learning and Conference and Guest Services staff.
  • Collaborate with Administration and Occupancy Management and Associate Director for Academic Initiatives to manage the Village Assignments process in the Housing Assignment’s platform for mentors and residents.
  • Provide leadership for the Village Advisory Council to facilitate ongoing strategic planning meetings.
  • Coordinate Village move-in logistics and start-of-term welcome events (i.e. symposium, Village orientation, Village Retreat).
  • Coordinate and facilitate recognition efforts through Spirit of the Village Awards and Departmental End of Year Event.
  • Maintain offices and Village spaces in collaboration with Residence Life team, Associate Director for Academic Initiatives and DASA Facilities, IT

Supervision

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate 5-21 Village Mentors and a Graduate Assistant, Residential Learning (where applicable).
  • Coach Village Staff through regular 1:1 and staff meetings.
  • Attend and assist in facilitating departmental training sessions.
  • Assist with departmental recruitment and selection processes.

Partnership Development

  • Responsible for creating, leading, and facilitating Advisory Council meetings
  • Cultivate interdisciplinary collaborations with other living and learning Villages to broaden student learning opportunities and leverage resources.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with DASA Units, academic college faculty, University staff, and members of the Greater Raleigh Community that support student learning outcomes and Village mission.
  • Cultivate and nurture a relationship with the Assistant Director and Residence Life Coordinator to further the Village mission and achieve a unified student experience within the residential community
  • Attend University Housing meetings, and serve on University, Division, and Departmental committees, as relevant to the position.

Inclusion

  • Assist the Department in creating an open and inclusive community.
  • Participate in and/or encourage staff and resident participation in on-going training related to multiculturalism.
  • Serve as a multicultural resource for fellow staff and/or residents.

Teaching/Instruction, and other Opportunities

  • Where applicable, develop and instruct linked Village academic courses collaborating with campus partners and the Assistant Director for Assessment, Research, and Evaluation to ensure curriculum alignment with Village mission and campus partner program goals, where applicable
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director, Residential Learning, develop a professional development plan
  • Enhance the Village reputation through publications, presentations, both on campus and at conferences

Other Work/Responsibilities

  • This position is required to handle confidential information appropriately and is bound by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This position is also a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act as well as Responsible Employees under Title IX and are mandatory reporters for any crimes of incidents of sex discrimination which they are made aware. In addition to reporting, training is required for these designations.
  • On a specific event/condition basis, the University may also take the unusual measure of “calling-in” employees who are not normally designated as “mandatory” and temporarily assign them to this status, if a specific adverse weather or other emergency event is critical enough to require it, as determined by the employee’s immediate supervisor or next level manager.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • A Master’s degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs, Student Counseling, College Student Development, Career Counseling, Village content area or a related field.

2 to 3 years post-Master’s work experience with progressively responsible duties in the following:

  • Administrative, supervisory, mentoring/coaching experience
  • College-level teaching, student advising, student development, program development, and/or curriculum development
  • Assessment
  • 1 to 2 years relevant experience focused on living and learning communities and/or Village content area
