Under the supervision of the Director of Career Planning & Internships and the Director of Advising, the qualified candidate will develop and implement a wide range of programs within Student Success and Career Planning. This position is responsible for supporting students in the Arch Learning Community (an academic support program for students with learning disabilities) with career preparation and employment readiness. In addition, the candidate will serve as a Success & Career Advisor for specific major(s) providing students with experiences that enhance academic, personal, and social development.
Career Planning & Internship Responsibilities:
- Work one on one and in small groups to support students in the Arch Learning Community with developing essential skills, obtaining internships and experiences to enhance their marketability upon graduation;
- Provide individual and group instruction on resume, cover letter and interviewing;
- As a critical member of the Arch Learning Community creating a network with staff, students and families to build career mindset based on integrating knowledge, strengths and interests;
- Teach one credit Career Development through a disability lens seminar to Junior and Senior students with learning disabilities;
- Create and facilitate a classroom workshop environment to support students as they begin the transition from college to either the working world or graduate school;
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource for Handshake, ensuring student and campus understanding;
- Develop relationships with disability friendly employers based on upcoming and ongoing needs of the student population;
- Connect students to resources that address barriers to employment for people with disabilities;
- Other duties as assigned.
Success & Career Advising:
- Advise and serve as the point person for a caseload of approximately 75 students providing high touch, individualized support;
- Provide appropriate academic and transitional support to students applicable to all aspects of the student's life: academic, personal, social, and career;
- In collaboration with Deans and Program Coordinators develop initiatives and programs to connect students with the college, each other, and their field of study promoting student persistence, retention and academic and career learning;
- Track students' academic progress through the college's monitoring process and make appropriate interventions as necessary;
- Act as first contact for advising caseload regarding career exploration, major selection as it relates to future careers, resume writing and interviewing that will include internships and job seeking tools;
- Design, plan and execute individual and group advising sessions, classroom and campus presentations;
- Guide students to make appropriate course selections, assist with registration process, adding and dropping of courses and graduation tracking;
- Assist in the implementation of programs and services designed to promote academic, personal and social/emotional success, engagement and retention of students;
- Teach Campus Connections and Career Connections (1 credit courses) to support first year advisees in the process of navigating the college experience and developing a career mindset;
- Other duties as assigned.
Managerial and Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Opportunity to supervise interns.
- Master's degree from an accredited institution in counseling and guidance, college student personnel, educational administration, student affairs, or related field;
- Experience working with students with learning disabilities;
- At least two years of experience in career services, academic advising, retention, or counseling services (with at least one year in a higher education environment) with a diverse population;
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills;
- Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders (students, colleagues, administrators), both verbally and in writing;
- Must possess diplomacy, confidentiality, and strong relationship-building skills;
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, especially with students;
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite;
- Knowledge of ADA in the workforce;
- Knowledge of career focused tools including LinkedIn, cover letters and resumes.
