Media Relations Manager, Office of Strategic Communications - Georgetown University

The Media Relations Manager promotes and protects Georgetown University through contact with media and related activities - for example, development and execution of proactive and responsive press strategies; creation and production of multifaceted campaigns for Georgetown news, programming, research, campaigns, events and other University efforts. Based in Washington, DC, this role has local, national and international impact. Reporting to the Senior Director for Strategic Communications, the Media Relations Manager has duties that include but are not limited to:

Media Relations
  • Create, implement and manage proactive media relations programming to generate positive coverage for Georgetown in local, national and international press
  • Direct a hometown news program to highlight student accomplishments, manage expert “news tips” online, provide regular analysis of university-wide media activities, serve on the University's emergency preparedness team; and design proactive communications efforts for university priorities such as research, interreligious dialogue and the Common Good
  • Cultivate ideas and relationships
  • Pitch ideas, research and events to media
  • Handle inquiries from print, broadcast and online media outlets; develop on tight deadline internal communications support tools such as fact sheets, Q&A documents and the like; seek creative ways to cultivate relationships with key faculty researchers and the news media; and provide counsel and serve as spokesperson as designated
  • Develop expertise related to media focused on topics and issues as assigned
  • Through ongoing research, analysis and relationship cultivation, provide guidance and/or direct assistance to colleagues on related public relations and communications strategies and efforts.
  • Manage and prioritize daily media inquiries
  • Manage all incoming campus press inquiries from student journalists to ensure coordinated response across the institution
  • Prepare briefings for senior university leaders, including provost and president, for interview opportunities with press


Strategic Communications Coordination, Client Consultation and Research:
  • Develop and write story ideas, press releases, news advisories, and tip sheets
  • Edit faculty op-eds and articles
  • Curate expert lists and directories
  • Work with colleagues to integrate and coordinate media relations with online, internal and external communications efforts
  • Contribute ideas for rich media and social media online content and, as assigned, write online news stories
  • Develop a strong working relationship with clients and a thorough understanding of their work in order to serve as their primary media relations liaison to the Office of Strategic Communications
  • Develop strategies that reach beyond traditional print media to incorporate use of video, web, social media and other resources is a key element of the position
  • Provide mentorship to staff in Office of Strategic Communications, including Strategic Communications Associate, Digital Media Associate and interns


Special Projects and Miscellaneous Functions
  • Manage and/or provide support on special projects for a variety of university-wide issues - as well as internal projects specific to the Office of Strategic Communications - as directed by the Senior Director for Strategic Communications or the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Communications
  • Manage rotating 24-hour on-call system for communications
  • Participate in university Emergency Response Team, and update media with university operating status during inclement weather
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed to support activities


Planning and Evaluation
  • Contribute to annual strategic communications plan for program areas
  • Evaluate results quarterly and annually and report on progress toward media relations goals


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree - preferably in communication, public relations, journalism or a related field
  • 3 to 5 years of media relations experience, with increasing responsibility and at least 1 year as a spokesperson
  • A solid track record of media placements
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Sound news judgment
  • Initiative, intellectual curiosity, and flexibility
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across organizational units to ensure consistency in communications
