Position Summary:
The Research Lead position is located within the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC) on the campus of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. The Research Lead will report to the CTEC Deputy Director and will coordinate CTEC's research initiatives, supervise staff and students, and develop new projects and programs


Essential Functions:
The Research Lead will primarily be responsible for the following research activities:
- Carry out quantitative and qualitative research across CTEC’s five core competencies: online extremism, threat financing, emerging technologies, asymmetric conflict, and preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE).
- Create, and serve as Principal Investigator on, programs and projects within CTEC’s research initiatives. Manage budgets, reporting requirements, and act as primary point of contact between client/granting organization and CTEC.
- Recruit, hire, and oversee staff and student researchers.


General Responsibilities:
Outreach and Public Relations: Manage CTEC’s public outreach, including social accounts, newsletters, branding, and website.
Outreach and Public Relations: Maintain and strengthen institutional ties with officials and experts in government, think tanks, and international institutions.
Research and Publications: Conduct original research and publish timely work on a broad range of terrorism, extremism, and counterterrorism issues.
Program Strategy: Drive development of long-term CTEC strategic vision. Work with stakeholders across MIIS and Middlebury to define how CTEC relates with institutional strategies. Produce short-, medium-, and long-term plans for CTEC’s staffing and resource needs, research portfolio, and partnerships.
Program Management: Oversee and strengthen CTEC’s relationships with the private sector, including managing current client relationships and building new ones.
Program Development: In conjunction with CTEC leadership and Middlebury Institute Grants officers, develop grant proposals in an effort to secure additional funding to carry out research. Help to set development and fundraising strategies and lead fundraising efforts, with CTEC leadership.
Administration: Assist CTEC leadership with administration, including budget management, hiring, and intra-institutional outreach.
Briefing/Public Speaking: Conduct presentations at conferences and the local community related to CTEC’s research and work. Speak with press regarding CTEC’s research.


Education:
Must have a BA/BS and Master’s degree in relevant field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-Knowledge of terrorism, extremism, and counterterrorism related issues.
-Demonstrated success in managing research projects, budgets, and employees.
- Excellent communication skills and experience working in a fast-paced environment.
-Proven development and fundraising skills.
- At least one-year of experience in working in an office that values teamwork and collaboration.
-Experience with media outreach and engagement, as well as contemporary media management tools.
- Data science skills, including machine learning, statistical modeling, data infrastructure, and visualization preferred.
-Knowledge of R and/or Python preferred.


Experience:
Must have one to three years of experience working on technology and terrorism issues.

Physical Demands:
Essential job functions require ability to sit for extended periods of time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. Also requires fine dexterity and ability to grasp, i.e for writing and word processing data/entry.
