Human Resources has an opening for a part-time University Staff (unclassified) Principal Human Resources Consultant. This is term limited position, ending June 30, 2022.

Principal Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed at an advanced or expert level.

Principal Professionals are either work leads over others or are considered a subject matter expert in a particular area.

Position Emphasis:

This position serves as a part-time (.75 FTE) Human Resources Professional that will manage full recruitment and onboarding process for University and Classified positions.  For Faculty positions, coordinate with the Faculty “cognate” home department.  

Examples of Work Performed:

Recruiting/Hiring/Onboarding

  • Manage full recruitment and onboarding process for University and Classified positions; services to include:
Work with unit managers to create and evaluate job descriptions, position announcements and position data entryAdvise hiring managers on search processes; coordinate efforts of unit internal search committeesEnsure all recruitments include an intentional focus on diversity and inclusion as part of the recruiting and hiring processAssist in the extension of offers to selected candidatesOnboard new employeesEnsure new employees complete required background checks and any unit-required training or employee orientation.Operational

    Manage day-to-day HR operational and payroll issues; services to include:Complete time reporting for payroll; HCM data entry to ensure accuracy and integrityAssist with managing the Radford Life Sciences compensation benchmarking process, in collaboration with GBF leadership and the central HR/Compensation team
  • Work with unit managers to review leave usage for unit employees and ensure University policies and procedures are being followed for compliance with applicable rules and guidelines; work with unit employees on leaves, including FMLA, parental leaves, etc.
  • Process transfers, promotions, FTE changes, pay rate changes, supervisor and org changes and overpayment transactions
  • Process employee terminations/separations (HCM entry & approval) and sick/vacation leave payouts; ensure an effective off-boarding process in in place, including conducting exit interviews with departing staff
Strategic

    Work with unit leadership to ensure best practices with respect to performance management, employee relations and employee development; services to include:
Provide strategic and practical insight and counsel to unit management on performance management, to include goal setting, coaching, evaluation and progressive disciplineWork with unit leaders to resolve employee relations issues, Provide counsel to unit leaders on organizational changes, employee classification changes, succession planning, restructuring, compensation alignments, compensation equity reviews and the unit’s career path framework Develop programs to improve retention, enhance skills, advance individual careers, applying University development resourcesAssist in leading employee engagement and participation eventsDevelop programs to promote positive employee morale, such as recognition programs and eventsSalary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $61,765 to $78,565 based on 1.0 FTE.

 The actual salary will be prorated based on the .75 FTE appointment.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in human resources, public administration, public administration, public policy, business, higher education administration, social sciences, behavioral sciences or a directly related field from an accredited institution. 
Substitution: A combination of education and related HR experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

  • The position requires a minimum of 8 years of extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for duties in the areas described above.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification from a professional human resources organization (SHRM, CUPA-HR, IPMA-HR)
  • Master’s degree in human resources, public administration, public administration, public policy, business, higher education administration, social sciences, behavioral sciences or a directly related field from an accredited institution. 
Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate a broad range of laws, rules, and regulations in order to exercise good judgment in applying them to human resource challenges.
  • Knowledge of the professional standards, concepts, and practices of recruitment and selection, employee relations, or organizational development and human resource policy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, including public speaking. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.Thorough knowledge of current management and leadership methods and best practices.
