Position SummaryReporting to the director of General Studies, the academic advisor provides general academic advising services to undeclared students and students in the Interdisciplinary Studies in Three Departments (IS3D) major. The academic advisor implements advising services as part of the newly aligned campus advising approach developed by the Division of Academic Affairs and Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. The advisor also supports campus-wide initiatives such as Explore SDSU, Summer Academic Orientation, and related programming for new undeclared and IS3D students.Undeclared Students: The incumbent provides general and academic advising for undeclared students with the aim of transitioning students to a preferred major in two semesters. The advisor is responsible for individual and group advising sessions, communications, and campaigns implementing the campus wide advising curriculum. The advisor also serves as “staff advisor” for the Undeclared Student Council--a formal student organization of the Associated Students, provides guidance and support for students on academic probation or seeking leaves of absence, reviews related major petitions, orients students to the use of SDSU Navigate, and refers students to other student services as needed.IS3D Students: In collaboration with major advising offices across campus, the incumbent provides general and academic advising for IS3D students, including assisting students choosing a pathway to the degree or, for first-year students, exploring and identifying three departments from which to craft their major plan. Approves all “major course of study” plans, offers individual and group advising sessions, communications, and campaigns implementing the campus wide advising curriculum, provides guidance and support for students on academic probation or seeking leaves of absence, orients students to the use of SDSU Navigate and refers students to other student services as needed.For more information regarding the Faculty Advancement and Student Success, click here.This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.Education and ExperienceExperience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.Specialized Skills RequiredWorking knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the Undeclared and Interdisciplinary Studies in Three Departments (IS3D) programs.Ability to use standard office computing tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google docs, email), EAB Navigate, and social media (Instagram, YouTube, etc.)Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.Demonstrated experience developing and coordinating programs and events.Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to sensitive issues and situations in an academic advising context.Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position.Ability to work well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing advising activities.Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaborate with faculty and other academic professional staff. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher educationPreferred Qualifications Two years of experience working with students in a higher education setting.Demonstrated record of proactive and self-reflective conduct in a professional setting.Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $ 4,304 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month.
