Position Summary:

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Spelman College invites applications a Visiting Assistant Professor position in Cultural Anthropology for the Fall 2021-Spring 2022 academic year. We are seeking a cultural anthropologist whose scholarship and teaching reflects an intersectional methodological and theoretical lens. The geographical area of specialization is open, and research and teaching interests may include, but are not limited to, food studies, medical anthropology, global public health, policy and applied anthropology, and/or other areas that complement the interests in our department. The ideal candidate should be willing to work closely with students at a liberal arts college and possess a demonstrated interest and/or experience with interdisciplinary problem-posing that is grounded in the discipline of anthropology. The ideal candidate will be expected to teach core courses in Anthropology such as Ethnographic Methods, Anthropological Theory, and Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, as well as Food Studies courses such as Food and Culture. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who have experience teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. Candidates should describe in their cover letter how their teaching would contribute to the Sociology and Anthropology Department.


Persons currently holding a Ph.D. in Anthropology are preferred, although “ABD” candidates in Anthropology will be considered. Previous experience teaching courses in anthropology is required.
