Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion

Student Affairs on the Homewood Campus
Baltimore, Maryland

THE SEARCH

Johns Hopkins University seeks an effective, collaborative, and strategic leader to serve as Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion within Student Affairs on the Homewood campus. The Associate Dean will work closely with their colleagues across campus and with University leadership to nurture a just, equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist culture for Homewood’s community of students. They will provide dedicated and integrated direction for a wide range of efforts related to student identities and their intersections, including racial, ethnic, gender, LGBTQ+, and social justice; cross-cultural and global appreciation and support; and religious and spiritual diversity. The goal for this Associate Dean is to cultivate a campus environment that reflects students’ highest aspirations for a community that celebrates diverse experience and thought, formed through self-discovery and awareness, integrative learning and thinking, socially responsible leadership, and intercultural and global consciousness.

Johns Hopkins University is one of the world’s premier research universities, whose mission is to advance knowledge for both its students and the world at large. The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (Krieger) and the Whiting School of Engineering (Whiting) form the heart of the Homewood campus in North Baltimore and are close partners, both academically and administratively. Krieger aims to be the finest small research-oriented school of arts and sciences in the United States, and Whiting, a top-20 engineering school, integrates education and research to address some of the world’s most intractable problems. Combined, the two schools house 5,300 undergraduate students and 2,850 graduate students, all of whom are supported by Student Affairs on the Homewood campus.

Johns Hopkins aims to foster an environment that allows all students to bring their whole selves to campus. This work is foundational to the University community, and it has taken on greater urgency in the past year as the United States continues to grapple with the impacts of systemic racism and white supremacy, highlighted by the violence perpetrated towards those belonging to marginalized racial and ethnic groups, as well as the deleterious healthcare inequities of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black and Latinx communities in particular. The Associate Dean will be part of a greater movement contributing to the United States’ ongoing fight against racism and other related forms of systemic prejudice.

The Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion will be the strategic and programmatic visionary for Homewood’s diversity and inclusion efforts, producing measurable results in demographic shifts, cultural change, and community comfort and safety for all. The Associate Dean will be an accomplished leader, with significant skill as a facilitator, collaborator, and convener. They will bring expertise leading complex conversations, bridging across differences, and engaging in transformative change efforts in service of students in a diversity and inclusion higher education context. They will also be a strong supervisor and project manager, with the ability to lead and inspire staff at various stages of professional experiences and development. Key attributes include authenticity, transparency, accountability, creativity, empathy, self-awareness, a willingness both to challenge and to learn, and deep understanding of and respect for the experiences of marginalized people.

Reporting to the Associate Dean are the directors of the centers of Multicultural Affairs, LGBTQ Life, Religious and Spiritual Life, and Women and Gender Resources, as well as the Administrative Coordinator. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of Student Life and will serve as a key member of the Dean’s leadership team, which includes the Deputy to the Dean of Student Life and the Executive Directors of Student Engagement and Student Outreach and Support Services.
