Position Summary

Michigan State University's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking to hire a Laboratory Technologist to perform analytical procedures including the extraction, purification, and chemical derivatization of xenobiotics from biological samples following laboratory generated standard operating procedures. Under the leadership of the lab supervisor/section chief, conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS and GCMS/MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultraviolet/visible spectrometry (UV/VS), and ICP for unknown compounds. Implements quality control/assurance procedures and maintains and repairs analytical instrumentation per manufacturer guidelines.

The ideal candidate for this position can multitask and prioritize while seeing tasks and projects through to completion. We are looking for a team member who communicates well with a wide range of audiences within the CVM, MSU, and beyond. A successful candidate will be a professional who is organized, does not “sweat the small stuff”, “sees the details,” and is able to remain calm, cool, and collected under pressure. The ideal candidate for this role will be team oriented, collaborative by nature, customer service focused, independent problem solver, and have a positive attitude, while maintaining a professional demeanor.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in science with course work in applied science medical laboratory technician; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in analytical chemistry or toxicology and experience in a high-volume diagnostic laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with chromatographic separation techniques and chemical detection including mass spectrometry. Experience with analytical equipment use and maintenance and lab safety techniques is essential. A degree in chemistry or biochemistry is a plus. Four year degree in a science field including a six-month internship at an approved institution laboratory.
