Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, coordinate major activities in biomedical and related technical areas to conduct studies on environmental exposures and cardiometabolic disorders. The Research Assistant 4 will work closely with a medium size group of investigators at Cardiovascular Research Institute (www.case.edu/cvri) studying the links between diverse environmental exposures including pollution and climate change and the effects on cardiovascular and metabolic health. In addition, this position will involve engaging with collaborators in many different parts of the world and could involve some travel (past the COVID pandemic of course!). This position will work with animals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Provide input and recommendations for experimental design, including proper use of controls and be able to communicate complex concepts in working with principle investigators, students, and research staff. (10%)Coordinate major activities of laboratory/ research. This includes performing the most complex research assignments using mice, tissues, and cells. Coordinate and perform experiments by operating a variety of instruments and scientific equipment. Perform techniques including flow cytometry, cell sorting, RNA isolation, western blots and qPCR, immunohistochemistry. Perform complex in flow cytometry analyses. This position will work with animals. (45%). May supervise research assistants, technicians and student interns and train them in laboratory techniques. Teach or instruct others in flow cytometric analysis, classic molecular biology techniques, and experiments relating to animal physiology. (10%)Perform high level and complex analysis and calculation of data, interpret data, and make recommendations to the principal investigator regarding subsequent study changes if required. (20%).Assist in developing procedures, coordinate information with others as needed. Develop and maintain research project methods, techniques, procedures, and regulatory documents including IACUC submissions (10%).

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Co-author research projects. Participate in manuscript and grant writing. (5%) Perform other duties as assigned to ensure contribution to research results on an ongoing basis. (5%)
CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor and lab members to discuss research and maintain workflow.

University: Occasional contact with other laboratories in the same department or other collaborating departments to share information.

External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Contact with student employees to exchange information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervise research assistants and technicians and intern students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 5 to 8 years of related experience required.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in science. Prefer Master’s degree in an approved biotechnology program.

REQUIRED SKILLS

    Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures in cell and molecular biology (flow cytometry, PCR, immunohistochemistry, Western blots). Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Ability to operate laboratory equipment.Ability to meet consistent attendance.Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.Must demonstrate compliance with CWRU animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines.Must demonstrate compassion for animals within CWRU facilities and dedication to the Animal Resource Center’s mission. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times.Previous experience working with animals preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards. Employee will be exposed general laboratory chemicals and will need to wear appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, coat, and eyewear. Working conditions will require working at the bench in a molecular genetics/ biology laboratory, working with mice in the laboratory and in the animal facility. Major physical demands include transferring animals from the animal holding facility to the exposure unit, sanitizing the exposure unit, and maintaining the animal colonies.

Case's animal facilities are accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and is managed according to the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” appropriate Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Public Health Service “Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals." This position, and all animal research personnel, are subject to internal compliance to SOM Animal Resource Center Standard Operating Procedures and to compliance regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, the State of Ohio Veterinary Practice Act, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration regulatory guidelines, US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine regulations and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
