Lecturer, Theater and Performance Studies

The Department of Theater and Performance Studies at Stanford University (TAPS) invites applicants for several non-tenure track Lecturer positions at varying levels of employment (part/full time) in 2021-22 in the following areas: Acting; Contemporary Dance; and Set, Lighting, and/or Video/Projection Design.

Lecturers will be responsible for at least one of the following: 1) Teaching between 1-6 classes, depending on position and employment level (part/full time) and/or 2) Working on the creative team for 1-3 mainstage productions. Additional duties may include supervising student assistants and serving as an advisor for the acting or design process for student productions.

All candidates must be not only committed to teaching, but also invested in expanding the fields of dance and theater. They are expected to provide evidence of teaching excellence, strong collaboration skills, collegiality, and the ability to work as a hands-on member of academic and production teams. Applicants with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion--as well as an ability to expand students' cultural frameworks--in an undergraduate academic environment are especially welcome.

For the Dance Lecturer Position:

  • Candidates must have teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: modern and/or contemporary dance, as well as dance composition. Experience in teaching other forms is a plus.
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring a diverse population of students is essential, as is a passion for teaching dance at all levels. Experience in teaching advanced students is a plus.
  • An undergraduate degree and previous experience teaching in higher education is required. Professional experience is preferred.

    For the Acting Lecturer Position:
  • Experience teaching acting
  • A demonstrable commitment to dismantling systems of oppression and exclusion to create a better future for the field of acting
  • Ethno-cultural competency in teaching acting is a plus.

    For Design Lecturer Positions, candidates must have:
  • Professional design experience and teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: scenography, lighting, and video/projection design
  • A passion for growing the design program and helping students to start their professional careers in design
  • Experience in designing educational productions, working with student and faculty directed projects. Being able to teach the practical aspects of your particular design area, such as props, set painting, electrics or graphic design is a must. Proficiency in software relevant to their design area may include one or more of the following: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Vectorworks, Qlab and Isadora.

    Salary range: $15,600 - $70,000, depending on position and employment level (part/full time). Application materials will be reviewed on a rolling basis; please submit materials by June 15, 2021.

    Stanford TAPS has an undergraduate Theater and Performance Studies B.A. program with concentrations available in Acting and Theater-Making; an undergraduate Minor program with concentrations in Theater and Performance Studies and Dance; and Ph.D. and Ph.D. Minor programs in Theater and Performance Studies. The mission of the program is to combine academic scholarship with arts practice.
