Animal Law Fellow

Position Summary

The Animal Law Fellow at the College of Law will research cutting-edge animal law topics and write for publication in law reviews. The Fellow will research/write articles for the College of Law Animal Legal & Historical Web Center. After researching, and with guidance, the Fellow will be a guest lecturer. The Fellow will guide and mentor law students in animal law-related student orgs. In May of 2021, MSU College of Law was named as one of the top colleges to study animal law by CEOWORLD Magazine.


20% Research cutting-edge issues within the field of animal law.

25% Write and seek publication of at least one article in a flagship law review of an ABA approved law school.

20% Write and edit materials for the Animal Legal & Historical Web Center.

5% Travel to national animal law conferences to represent the Law College.

10% Study techniques of teaching in law school and be a guest lecture in one or more animal law classes.

5% Present animal law topics to relevant student organizations including the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund.

15% Develop a capacity to guest teach in additional areas such as environmental law or property law.

Minimum Requirements

We are seeking applicants with a proven capacity for legal scholarship, a passion for teaching, and an exemplary interest in animal issues. Other qualifications include:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent legal research skills
  • A strong writer who can distill complicated legal issues for a general audience
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a small team
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Be open to receiving constructive feedback
  • Hard-working and self-motivated

The ideal applicant will have two years’ activity after obtaining the J.D., either in a clerkship, an animal related activity, or other relevant experience.

Legal publications will be considered, but not required.
