The Systems Engineer is an important member of the overall systems operations team supporting enterprise software applications and infrastructure systems. The position will participate in the design, management, and deployment of complex applications with responsibility for the proper functioning of these applications in the WPI technical environment, integration with other systems as necessary, and high standards for availability and security.

  • Administration duties in the MS 365 suite, to include Azure AD, Exchange online, SCCM

  • Configure/modify applications for performance and security in the WPI technical environment.

  • Write technical specifications to guide the selection of new software applications or modifications to existing applications.

  • Participate in WPI’s development of strategy, processes, skills, and operational practices for the support of cloud-based software applications and their interaction with the premises-based applications.

  • Participate in ITSM-based processes such as Change Management, Configuration Management, Incident and Problem management.

  • Formulate processes for software testing and quality assurance.

  • Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and operations.

  • Support incident and problem management by providing Tier 3 support for infrastructure functionality and performance issues for software applications.

  • Coordinate with WPI ITS units responsible for Enterprise Systems, Academic and Research Computing, Information Security, Network, Telecommunications, Systems Operations, Support Services, and the Academic Technology Center.

  • Works under close supervision of System Operations manager. Will be mentored on technical topics by Level II or Level III staff colleagues. Will performs work in team and project settings.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field with 1-2 years of experience.

  • Administration of Azure AD, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams and the overall O365 eco system.

  • Experience in an Active Directory enterprise, with an understanding of directory services and domain management, DNS, DHCP, GPO, etc.

  • Understanding of core Linux/Unix fundamentals; command line navigation, permissions, services, and basic troubleshooting.

  • Familiar with Linux infrastructure tools including LDAP and Ansible.

  • Experience managing software applications: deployment, configuration, operation, and incident and problem management.

  • Knowledge of configuration characteristics of software applications, including the underlying infrastructure such as networking and authentication.

  • Understanding of scripting and automation tools, preferred experience with PowerShell

  • Display strong ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to communicate successfully with all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to write technical documentation for use by IT colleagues and end users.

  • Must be available to work occasionally outside normal business hours for incident management and upgrades.
